Someone should ask Starmer and Mahmood whether they think the Kindertransport, for example, should have been a return ticket. Whether Alf Dubs, rather than becoming a Labour MP and now Lord, ought to have been sent back with his family to Czechoslovakia once it was liberated from German rule.
This contribution to the volume of human misery is yet another policy from Labour based on a false premise, in this case that refugees are overly attracted to Britain. It will increase bureaucratic limbo, thus making worse the problem of "cohesion" it purports to solve.

UK set to limit refugees to temporary stays
Shabana Mahmood is expected to say the era of permanent protection for refugees is over, in major changes to the UK's asylum and immigration system.

And not to get too real on a late night post, but yeah.

I am *so* fucking done with people acting like this is normal. That the president of our country can just flat out lie and it’s not a big deal. That an entire branch of our government has been subverted to the whims of a serial liar.
As someone who has had multiple MRIs, you absolutely know what the techs are imaging before they put you in the machine, because if there is any sort of metal in the target area you *really* need to let them know beforehand since cleaning bloodstains out of the tube is NOT a good time
Trump: I had an MRI and the result was outstanding.

Reporter: Was it your brain?

Trump: I have no idea what they analyzed, but whatever they analyzed, they analyzed it well.

kinda seems like journalists have a bad tendency for the same sort of kneejerk reaction that other media people had when MeToo first happened

"what? so now it's illegal to go to dinner and share a hotel room and fall in love with your interview subjects?"

This is the rule of Starmer’s Labour, nothing more or less. A Britain that exists for the rich, the nobility, the AI barons, and blames all problems on refugees.

The country that prohibits my wife and I from living there because our income isn’t high enough, even though I am British.

I’m pretty sure we are looking at the last, best chance to stave off complete disaster over the next two or three years. Incrementally getting back to the same status quo ante that led us here will not fix what ails us, and we may not get a decent chance to ensconce freedom again for quite a while.
I mean my position is that the American constitutional order has, for a number of reasons only some of which directly concern Trump, collapsed

Any seeming "normalcy" gained without a real remaking will be a cheap illusion. I take the Biden years as vindication for this view.

Good work by COURIER @couriernewsroom.bsky.social

One of many examples of the new journalistic models evolving to fill existing-journalism voids.
This is cool. COURIER has created a searchable database with all 20,000 of the files just released from Epstein’s estate.

Trump's name appears in them more than anyone else, in 1,628 documents.

Olivia Nuzzi's memoir is a combustive portrait of America, President Trump and the scandal with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. that upended her career.

In an exclusive interview with The New York Times, she recalls the infatuation that consumed her, Kennedy’s use of psychedelics and much more.

I for one could never follow a nepo baby of the bourgeois elite. I’d rather follow a true revolutionary like a Lenin, a Guevara, a Castro, a Robespierre, or at the very least an FD Roosevelt.
downwardly mobile educated alienated elite-adjacents clearly are a large part of the contemporary american left's constituency, but it's such a stupid thing to have a complex about or considering particularly damming. read like any history book ever about who starts political movements.

Nabokov: I am going to write about a monster doing sick shit

Readers: wow this book is hot.

Nabokov: oh so all you are monsters and cant comprehend the text.
Any time people start with the ephebophelia nonsense I want to point them to this quote by Nabokov about Lolita where he just fucking eviscerates an interviewer claiming that Humbert Humbert was the equivalent of 40 year olds marrying 20 year olds:

what can you even say, this is just evil
Yes, that is as Kafkaesque as it seems; the BIA is saying that a child adjudicated to be abused, abandoned, and neglected, who has already been approved for a status that will permit the child to get a green card, should nonetheless be deported instead — because of backlogs outside of their control.

I remember the fucking Lewinsky coverage. Our media have become craven hacks carrying water for rich pedophiles and I feel insane typing that but there it is.

One of the many reasons we have to fight the rise of the far right is the risk they pose to undoing the progress we *have* made.
Lot of people are already passing this around with the usual "WHY ISN'T ANYONE DOING ANYTHING" shrieks, while ignoring the fact that the article literally says that this is a *significant* decrease from the warming that we were on track for even a few years ago.

you could fact check this — there aren’t 30 million illegal immigrants and there is no evidence that the presence of an immigrant in say houston has any impact on housing in madison, wisconsin — or you could note straightforwardly that this is just nazi rhetoric

So “it turns out Spanberger took positions that strongly challenged Trump on immigration in ways that some Democrats have been reluctant to do.”

The @gregsargent.bsky.social analysis re VA’s gov race seems significant underscoring why Ds need to go on offense re Trump/Miller’s deportation regime.
This has gotten lost: Abigail Spanberger won big after vowing to RESCIND Glenn Youngkin's executive order directing local cooperation with ICE and voting AGAINST the anti-immigrant Laken Riley Act. Yet she gained bigly with working class.

You actually don’t hate the NYT enough
how about a piece of investigative journalism that accuses a mayoral candidate of fraud based on an application for college he filled out when he was 17 that a neo-Nazi gave the paper because they were racist? you're insulting the intelligence of everyone here to imply this is about standards
I am not defending Landon’s relationship with Epstein. In fact, the NYT didn’t even try to defend it. He left the paper. What I’m saying is that a piece of investigative journalism that exposes a secret, criminal act such as statutory rape requires far more than what is in these emails.
