The tech bros grew up watching cool scifi with androids and spaceships and we got to the 21st century and it didn't happen and now they're just trying to fake it till they make it
I work in procurement and our vendors have been rolling out AI systems and... it has been a disaster. The AI gets everything wrong and I have to navigate a labyrinthian telephone menu to get to a human to fix it.

This has big "We'll colonize the moon in 10 years!" Musk energy.

Funny how it's always "30% of Reform voters want some awful thing" and not "a huge majority of British people don't want this awful thing".

American tech is just toxic waste at this point
The *vast majority* of people who work at Meta today are people who willingly chose to work at the company after it directly enabled a genocide, according to multiple independent global human rights organizations, including Amnesty International. It is a warehouse for psychopaths.
This company is so uniquely toxic and awful.

the "it's impossible to have a conversation about AI right now" folks need to grok that a huge volume of that furor is entirely justified rage at the fact tech oligarchs purchased an automated murder autocracy; rage that's good and useful and deserves a generous berth in the months and years to come

📣 NEW! I’ve just released the BIGGEST and perhaps most creative project I’ve ever worked on!

“Searching for Birds” searchingforbirds.visualcinnamon.com 🐤

A project, an article, an exploration that dives into the data that connects humans with birds, by looking at how we search for birds.

no, it simply isnt.
People are talking about capital using gAI as an excuse to conduct mass lay-offs, about students losing learning because theyre being lied to about gAI in education, about the mass theft of the work of artists and authors to train LLMs, about CSAM and nonconsensual sexual images.
The predominent anti-AI position on bsky is that AI is useless, fake, shit and basically the same as NFTs, destined to collapse in months once everyone sees how poor it is. So anyone who suggests that it could improve or be useful to any boss in any situation in the future must be evil.

Yes some immigrants can be awful people too. Ask the people of Monaco about Ratfcliffe.

Hats off to the gammon scum who voted for this
Saw this on LinkedIn. Our immigration system is morally bankrupt and economically ridiculous. Shameful.

The good/bad news is that more creative workers and software developers need to start collectives and publishing companies and product companies without taking funding. It's a pain in the ass, but it's possible.

My doomer-worry about AI is not that the LLMs become omnipotent and take over the world but that the wealthy and powerful use it as a means to consolidate power and marginalize or lay off skilled workers and also everything about our technological and political and social life gets worse

The New Yorker Claude article really emphasizes something that's important to keep in mind, which is that the people who form a bubble around the industry - not just executives and finance, but journalists and supposedly neutral observers - are there because they've already bought in

now that i'm thinking about it:

• google got everybody to seo the shit out of their websites
• it hoovered up that information to train its answer bot
• it now cuts out other websites completely
• why continue to play along
in other words, if google is going to short-circuit your website anyway, why not give people a reason to short-circuit google

Which is really the way it's always been: the greater productivity benefits capital not labour.
This is what I am seeing across the market "Use AI to get more done, so the company can deliver faster with less added expense." And "Since its the AI tools delivering the increase in performance, no raises"

What do y’all think about making a directory of Epstein-free tech? No execs or funders who have ties to Jeffrey Epstein. Maybe we make a little logo that apps or websites could put up. Probably needs a less triggering name, but I think the concept would have value in helping people make decisions.

Who they lose to will also set the tone for his successor. If to Reform, they'll double down on chasing the Reform voters. If the Greens, they'll double down on chasing the Reform voters.
If they lose Gorton & Denton the demands for Starmer to go will be overwhelming, & he likely won't be able to hold on till he's forced to resign after the local elections....

One day when I really want to burn it all down, I might write about the affect of this certain type of intellectual who engages with AI/LLMs/whatever like this. I’ve seen it up close and in person. They all have a empty eyed, hyper focused gaze — so far up their own asses they could shit a cough.

I can see why vibe coding is popular with some founders though. They are used to shoddy greenfield prototypes they'd make themselves or hire some student or nephew to bang out in a few weeks. Trying to produce quality output is a good way to burn through your allocation of tokens.
Increasingly I'm seeing posts from developers saying something along the lines of "hit my token limit, waiting for it to reset", and I can't help wondering if employers will soon see "I can work just fine without an LLM" as a plus on a candidate's CV.

Just pick out a nice looking late 18th/early 19th century building in a British city. Glasgow's Gallery of Modern Art for example. Where did that money come from
There are some great threads going about how awful sugar plantations were.

I just want to add something as a historical romance author: every time you see someone adding a sugar cube to tea in a historical romance, think of those threads and the blood-soaked cost of the sugar.

I'm no political strategist but has anyone in Labour considered *not* alienating any huge chunk of their base? I just feel like they tried alienating the left and the centre left and the public sector workers and the academics, and none of those things worked great, so maybe give my idea a whirl?

Executive decision making without/with AI: George Lucas making New Hope vs Phantom Menace
A key thing about corporate use of genAI is that it removes all the friction involved between the executives' weird fetish shit and inner thoughts, and public display

It does to corporations what alcohol does to a bigot.
using AI cuts corners on involving people who know better. negativity for christmas is an awful ad concept even if it was made by people - so a creative team would push back on the request. business people like AI doesn't argue, not understanding experts were protecting them from their own bad ideas
