I think we treat reading and writing, specifically, as learnable (as opposed to visual art and music, which get a lot of the same "innate talent" talk)

though this might be a me-specific recollection, I have never been even decent at the latter two (though this never stops me from singing)
I maintain that a major difference between the humanities and math/sciences is we treat the latter as an innate skillset and we treat the humanities as learnable.

Also the people IME have the most contempt for the humanities are the ones who struggle to write a simple paragraph.

I think we will someday miss having the MLS season end immediately before the college football playoffs, just for the timely hit of perspective on what a dysfunctional and confusing playoff system actually looks like

I'm happy for the opportunity Wilfried Nancy has taken but Celtic IN PARTICULAR feels like hard mode because the fans are not used to having more than one other team to worry about
Recently subscribed to Apple TV bc of MLS, and have been finally catching up on season 1 of Onside. In ep 2 Nancy says “I don’t really like expectations” which is in a way funnily ironic given he is now coaching a team that is 50% expectation of dominance and 50% hatred of the English

in retrospect we shouldn't have made so much fun of Ted Stevens

actually at the time we shouldn't have made so much fun of him, he was pretty much correct if you compensate for "old person talking about thing invented after his prime"
Periodic reminder that public understanding of computers and the Internet peaked roughly contemporaneously to the "series of tubes" incident.

Yes, *that* was peak public understanding of infotech.
Only getting worse generationally. Non-swe types don’t even know what files and folders are. Everything is an app on a touch screen.

I would kill to have a public that understands the Internet merely as badly as Ted Stevens did.

it is so funny we’re back at square one with the streaming services. brief moment of low cost/high budget tv was just the product of another VC cash pit.

the thing about middlemen is that everyone hates them but whenever they're removed they just reconstitute themselves because it turns out everyone also hates the cognitive load of dealing with all the individual providers of the vast variety of goods and services and content we want
at least uber forced the cab companies to use a mobile app and stop scamming tourists. i honestly dont know what we accomplished here with streaming. distributed IP just means im paying more for extra services with less scale.

Madame is watching Person of Interest off and on after not finishing it the first time and I'm torn about whether to bring this up to her or leave it as a Fun Surprise
I hope he brings the acting chops he used in the series finale of Person of Interest, where the writers hated him so much his character was shot to death before a cruise missle blew him up.

I will only ever remember Varoufakis as the guy Valve hired to research the Steam marketplace so him going pro-gamer mode when it came to all the racism in the new NSS shouldn't be unexpected
Why is he like this? Does he wake up and go: "My vatnik brain compels me to lick the yummy boot of murder and oppression"

I am extremely sympathetic to the design of the post-LRT Ottawa transit system as a concept, even though it has made a number of people's individual commutes require more transfers than they used to

its actual EXECUTION, thanks to resource constraints from Council, has been borderline unforgivable
It used to be quite good but in a way that wouldn't scale

and the unified city government was never going to spend enough to properly scale it, especially once the first mayor who tried promptly lost an election before being able to get shovels in the ground

hilarity has ensued

It's extremely funny that this person is getting really annoyed by reply limiting (something I personally also find kinda annoying, but which also exists on Twitter) while abusing "removed by author" (a unique blueskyism)
Helen, the comments aren't closed to *you*. They're just closed for quality control purposes to followers, though I am surprised you didn't figure that out given the quality of the average Bluesky response that hits the Discover feed. It is fascinating how deeply offended you seem by this setting?

always a surprise when the answer to "hey, what happened to that interesting show that I read about being made?" is "the producer was arrested for fraud shortly before the planned release and his business partner sued him"

RIP to "Glow & Darkness" I guess

Few games have as consistent of a "yeah, that game ruled" hit rate than MLS Cup, especially considering expectations. Another worthy installment tonight.

I was too busy watching to notice these effects of Vancouver's subs in real time in this level of detail, which is why I'm just Some Guy and Kieran is someone you should follow to better understand the game (and someone I am now following to better understand the game)
Vancouver just had nothing since doing Gauld for Ahmed. He was the stability to get you into the final third and the second guy for the press. No second guy now, and can't sustain anything final third. Think this is curtains.

hopefully the city gets it too

The tears have to be proud because we have excited people in Vancouver, we have created something that people want to watch.”

Football Manager is more realistic about MLS than I thought, I can never pull off the Cup win in the first season after switching Vancouver to a ball-dominant 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 hybrid either

welp, live by the triple post and die by the triple post

it's a game of inches and moments and Miami got them this time, but I'm looking forward to seeing just how Sorensen fits Muller and Gauls in the same XI next season
