on some level the real divide on asylum policy is between people who have the wherewithal of mind to imagine being forced from your home at gunpoint, and idiots
i don't think you need to get significantly more elaborate than this: in a world on fire, where multiple total wars are actively raging and the climate is getting more and more unstable, people will flee. you would flee. i would flee. accept this and fix your heart, or die

"Preserving our culture" is easily the biggest signifier of reactionary thinking across virtually all categories.

Culture changes. It melds and evolves with its environment. And while some aspects are worth remembering and even bringing into the future, the majority is just the vibes of the time.

that will teach me to feel sorry for Denis Bouanga for even one single second
Goooooal! Gabon tie it in the 89th minute. A deflected shot from just inside the area ricochets past the goalkeeper & we may be on course for extra time.

cue the complaints about "why do we have to pay for all these artsy shows we don't care about when we're just interested in the soccer/F1/Friday night baseball?"

or for a change of pace "why do we have to pay for all this soccer/F1 when we're just interested in Foundation/Slow Horses/Pluribus?"

Another story of on-demand transit (or "microtransit") hype. The cute and responsive technology works in a tiny rural town, so they propose to do it in the big city, where it will be overwhelmed. Big cities need big transit, not these distractions.

with all due respect to M. Nancy's ability to inspire and marshal soccer players, this says more about said people overseas than us
Wilfried Nancy on potential calendar flip:

“If they don’t do it, there is no logical thought behind the desire of MLS to become a really good league. Simple as that.

If you don’t make the change, you can talk & talk, but it’s impossible people overseas will take us seriously."
Sources: MLS owners are expected to vote on flipping to fall-spring calendar at Thursday's BOG meeting. Could happen as soon as 2027.

Also: Changes to competition format expected too, including single league table + divisions.

to be fair some sort of deal would be the mutual best outcome with a rational counterparty

so I can forgive those of us who tried to find one this time around, as long as they cut bait eventually
The emerging consensus that a deal with the United States was never, ever possible is progress of a sort. But it also means that Canadian governments have wasted an entire year chasing clouds, since a deal was the main goal of Carney and Ford ("Fortress Am-Can") from day one.

tbf any number is infinitely more than zero

but seriously social media/Online is my main avenue for interaction with people significantly younger than me and this thread/this article is going to make me recontextualise a LOT of those interactions
ever since I learned about three-cueing I've developed infinitely more patience for replies on social media. mfers literally do not know how to read. people are walking around conjuring random meanings into words they don't know, and they don't know a lot of words. it's crazy

also I remain unconvinced that the MLS fanbase that flips out and loses interest/steam over a two week break in the middle of the playoffs or the one month break for the 2023 Leagues Cup is going to handle a two month midseason winter break terribly well
yeah, the real issue has never been "playing more games in winter", because there are ways around that

the issue is giving up dates in summer IN EXCHANGE for dates in winter that you cannot actually use + Nebulous Player Movement Benefits + scheduling the playoffs vs the NBA/NHL instead of football

I feel like there would be fixture congestion gripes about this but it's probably the one fix best of 3 NEEDS

(some way to prevent penalties before game 3, like first to five points instead of just two wins, would be NICE but there's a wonderful simplicity to "win twice, no matter how, or go home")
This format is great. It gets each team a home game to kick up playoff buzz & builds storylines.

The only thing is that it should be a Sat - Wed - Sun format across the board, so we dont get teams off for 3 weeks if they sweep the opening round.
(Whispers - this format is good?)

I think I’m officially on board
