Sir Tom Stoppard is a Czech-born British playwright and screenwriter. He has written for film, radio, stage, and television, finding prominence with plays. His work covers the themes of human rights, censorship, and political freedom, often delving into the deeper philosophical bases of society. Stoppard has been a playwright of the National Theatre and is one of the most internationally performed dramatists of his generation. He was knighted for his contribution to theatre by Queen Elizabeth II in 1997. .. more

Years ago, I started noticing that post-2016 America could best be divided into days that felt like SOUTHLAND TALES and days that felt like TRUE DETECTIVE season two. I put this theory of mine into words for the good folks at @mid-theory.bsky.social: mid-theory.com/2025/01/14/t...
The Southland-Vinci Theorem
Using Los Angeles as a synecdoche for the nation, these stories ambitiously try to chart the scale of America’s degradation, only to find that it’s easy to become artistically inchoate in the proce…

Notice: “work sucks” when directed at men means that we need better working conditions and higher pay. “Work sucks” when directed at women means that they should drop out and have babies.

Same!

My hot take is that if McDaniel looked and talked like Dan Campbell but was otherwise exactly the same, he wouldn’t be on the hot seat and the story would be “what can you expect him to do with Tua?” But because he likes analytics and looks like a coffee shop millennial he’s a target.
Tough day for the "McDaniel lost the locker room" crowd

Dolphins beat the Bills 30-13 for their first win over Buffalo since 2022

De'Von Achane finishes with 225 scrimmage yards and 2 TD -- he's the first player in franchise history to record multiple career games with 225 scrimmage yards

My fascination with Henri Verneuil peaked this year with I… FOR ICARUS, basically a French JFK over a decade before Stone’s movie came out. Sleek and sharp mainstream cinema that’s morally clear-eyed in a way that’s sadly all too relevant still. boxd.it/axnQK9

I don’t know how to say it any more clearly than this: if Democrats are willing to scrap something like ACA subsidies, you have to be willing to tell them you’re not going to vote for them. And then actually do it.

You can’t keep voting for ppl who sell us all out to compromise with fascists

Medievalists will be pleased to know that Atlanta Vintage Books has Greenblatt’s THE SWERVE filed under fiction.

But people will act like Trump has to come out and say a slur on-mic for us to credibly call this administration racist, which it is.

As a film in its own right, undeniably stunning and emotionally powerful. As an adaptation: kind of a failure. The pros undeniably outweigh the cons, but part of me wonders if there’s an unadaptability to Denis Johnson’s novella.

Yorgos is on an insane heater right now. KINDS OF KINDNESS has only grown more brilliant for me, and I loved this the most I've loved his films since THE FAVOURITE.

This excellent line by @hamrahrama.bsky.social about a film I didn't like encapsulates in part what I, a guy who perhaps masochistically got a PhD in English on this kind of dramatic literature, love about Yorgos in the last decade. KINDS OF KINDNESS is straight up theatre of the absurd.

This is, for my money, the best run of movies by a living director at the moment.

If you're ever out on the Central Coast, there's honestly something strange and dreamy about it during this change in time. I miss it still.

"It's RIDICULOUS and SOCIALISM to ask that the GOVERNMENT get involved in health care... unless I need it pwetty please!"

I have seen at least five moments in the last five innings of this game that could begin a Secret Base "Rewinder" video.

The band Caravan Palace are one of the best electro-swing groups to ever do it, and asked me to white the oral history of their 10-year-old masterpiece, ROBOT FACE.

I agreed, and this month-in-the-making work is now up on PopMatters. Enjoy!

Ten years ago, electro swingers Caravan Palace released a masterpiece that defied even their own fans. (Robot Face) is what their legacy hangs on.

New incredible detail here: ICE says a match in its facial recognition app Mobile Fortify is a "definitive" determination of a person's status, and that this overrides birth certificates. This is an app ICE is using in the field to scan people

I see The Daily Wire is trying to corner the market on "American 'Catholics' who are actually Protestants and just use 'trad' Catholic optics to legitimize their own beliefs"

This is a new one for the scam text playbook: “invite your mark to become the protagonist of a gothic novel”

I don't know that I'd put it for myself as you have here, but I will say this: I feel quite emotionally resonant with the fiction of Cormac McCarthy lately, so, I guess, same?

The last time I spent any Harry Potter money was quite a long time ago when I went to the Universal LA Harry Potter theme park, and barring a massive change of heart on JKR's part (backed by putting money where mouth is), I won't give money to anything she's got her licensing dollars on.

Folks who, like me, grew up with these stories and have a connection with them: there's nothing wrong with having your own bond with the books you've kept from childhood, or feeling a tie to the series (a character, a movie, etc). You can feel that way AND not give this ghoul any more money.
A portion of every dollar spent on Harry Potter merchandise goes to anti-transgender campaigns.

I don’t understand why set pieces get this kind of hate, especially since they’re so often generated by good offense

Here’s my PTA rank now that I’ve seen all of his movies (PUNCH-DRUNK my one missing piece). 4-6 a logjam that could change at any time.

Rewatching BOOGIE NIGHTS for the first in a long time tonight. A blast, to be sure, but I’ll say this: if Pureflix wanted to make a movie about how working in the porn industry leads to moral downfall… obviously it wouldn’t have the swears and sex, but the general plot beats would be pretty similar.

I say this not to mitigate how terrible the White House thing is, becuase it is, but the other possibility about the renovations is that he wants to leave behind something no one can deny is his when he does leave.
and if you think he's going to willingly leave his newly renovated manse Jan 20 2029....
This demolition is a statement of *ownership*
the president has destroyed the east wing of the white house without so much as a word of input from anyone else to build a royal ballroom paid for with bribes
