I generally consider myself a small-government type but it has been very obvious for quite some time that there is no solution to the deficit that does not involve substantial tax increases for the top two income quintiles at least.

Taxes gotta go up.
So, of these four options, we have:
1. Economic collapse
2. financial engineering (that probably won’t work, and even if it does still wouldn’t be great)
3. Eliminate at least part of the American welfare state
4. Increase the average families taxes by $77 every two weeks ($5.50 a day).

hard choice

This is true and I was the only one on set excited about it (and playing the song on my phone to blank stares)
Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

This is interesting because many advocates started because of the safety angle but I guess everyone would already be on board if most people responded the same way
I’ll give the last word to advocate/journalist

One of my more controversial opinions is that the US needs to significantly raise taxes to the tune of a couple % of GDP right now, even before any expansive social democratic reforms, and that means you—yes you, dear highly educated professional—will need to pay up, not just nebulous billionaires.

One weird rule I would love to see implemented (or reimplemented, depending on where you live) is no overnight street parking.

This is wild to me since when I was in NYC my impression is that the bikes were downright cheap. Compared to Lime in Seattle that is.
This morning, Citi Bike announced new rate hikes for the upcoming year.

Citi Bike is already the most expensive bike share program in the United States.

It’s time to finally publicly fund this program and bring it in line with major bike share systems around the world.
Statement from Transportation Alternatives on Citi Bike Rate Hikes — Transportation Alternatives
More than twice as many New Yorkers ride a Citi Bike every year as the Staten Island Ferry. Citi Bike is already the most expensive bike share program in the United States.  NEW YORK — This ...

A dirty secret about Hallmark movies is that they're a) largely filmed in Canada, and that b) the trio of Eastern Ontario "Picturesque Small Towns" that predominate location shooting are all within a 45min drive of the fourth largest city of the country. Many of them have commuter transit systems!
we should fund hallmark movies where a lady returns home for Christmas and her high school sweetheart looks like shit because he’s been worn down by the mundanity of small town life

People's TVs are often configured terribly: motion smoothing, overly sharp, 'vibrant' color

Avatar may have been convincing in theaters but looks like fake garbage at home
My take on the "AVATAR hasn't made a big cultural impact" thing is that for movies in the last 40 years to make a big cultural impact, people need to watch them over and over and over, and among popular films, AVATAR is uniquely bad at being a movie that people want to watch on their TV.

Vancouver’s West End is the densest neighbourhood in Canada. Its mix of housing includes lots of apartment towers.

I highly recommend anyone who thinks tall buildings ruin neighbourhoods to visit. It really is a nice experience.

Love this! I have exactly the same feeling riding over bridges in this city. Each time I do it I take in the view and think about how lucky I am to live here. It's a feeling that's hard to experience any other way other than on the seat of a bicycle.
