A good reason to block someone the very first time they start hedging about the usefulness of generative AI is that this keeps you from seeing them 6 months later shrieking about why quantum theory demands they eat their family.

I think realistic video generation is pretty much as close to the classical 'intrinsically evil technology' as you can get. It has no benign applications for which an alternative tech isn't superior, and all the things it is better at doing are cartoonishly malevolent.

the only good thing about this part of the horrible shooting story is that it may turn out to be a gut shot for the carcass of @cbsnews.com and that's great. and unlike the ICE goon CBS has real internal bleeding.

The Trump admin is moving to quickly deport two men who witnessed, they say, ICE guards choke a fellow detainee to death.

The admin moved to deport men right after they spoke the Washington Post.

This is the death that the medical examiner has already ruled likely homicide.

The two men’s eyewitness accounts of the Jan. 3 death of Geraldo Lunas Campos at a Texas detention camp differ from the Department of Homeland Security’s account of the incident.

I'm sure everyone will be SHOCKED to hear that the videos do not show the whole "people came out and attacked ICE with snow shovels" thing that ICE claimed was what happened. This was not a remotely defensive gunshot.

I keep thinking about them saying "haven't you learned [from Renee Good's murder]" and... they don't understand why people are still coming out after they've shown they can and will kill us, because they're cowards, and they don't understand what it's like not to be a coward

No, these are very serious comments.

ChatGPT has absolutely no goddamn place in graduate education. It steals from other authors, routinely gets major facts wrong, hallucinates sources, and generally makes the prose flat and boring as hell.

And if you shill for it in my mentions, I'll block you.

You do not, should not, accommodate Nazis. A "difference of opinion" or the "right to speak" or "reasonable debate" stops when you're dealing with a Nazi. Run them out on a rail.

If an artist tells you they trained their own GenAI, they're lying to you. It takes billions of pairs and hundreds of thousands of dollars in compute time to generate even the dumbest model.

What they're doing is taking an existing model -- trained on stolen work -- and training it on their work.

And one more thing. Students. If you have a professor who is, for some reason, outsourcing their own job to ChatGPT....drop the class.

If they tell you to "ask ChatGPT" for sources, drop the class.

Because they apparently don't know their own discipline well enough to teach it.

I say this as someone who has been actively researching GenAI ethnographically for the last few years.

The idea that ChatGPT is some kind of unfair leg up is Silicon Valley propaganda. It's really not and it is more recognizable than you might think.

I have some more bad news.

If an admissions committee even suspects you used ChatGPT for your application letter, they'll almost certainly decide not to waste a precious admissions spot on you.

Instead they'll give it to, you know, someone who actually likes to write and knows how to do it.
I have some bad news. One, if you need to use ChatGPT for your graduate application letter, you are not ready for graduate school.

Two, no, not "everyone is doing it" and those who don't do it aren't "losing out." ChatGPT is not an advantage.
An impressive number of graduate applications this year used the phrase “curiosity-driven approach” 🤔
