I would like to share something.

A year ago, Trump won and I was furious and scared so I sent a text to a few of local women I knew and asked them to join me at a meeting and invite like-minded women they knew. A few showed up, then a few more. We became a group called The Salon and we meet monthly

I love this movie bc when you're five it's a cute story about a mouse reuniting with his family, and when you're an adult it's "HOLY SHIT this movie is about pogroms and immigration and enfranchisement and the labor movement and electoral corruption and tenements and industrializiation and AHHHHH"
It’s hard to believe but there was a cartoon about an immigrant mouse and it was seen as totally fine and not controversial and not woke because it was an aspirational and nice thing about America that people could come here and find a better life

Today's newsletter is about the awful and extremely political decision to gut Teen Vogue for parts www.readtpa.com/p/teen-vogue...
Teen Vogue's Award-Winning Journalism Was Too Much Trouble for Condé Nast
The outlet just won recognition for speaking truth to power. Condé Nast responded by eliminating its entire politics staff and folding it into Vogue.

Under Trump, the draconian future of homelessness policy is coming into focus: mass internment. Utah is building a 16-acre site to detain up to 1,300 homeless people inside locked "accountability centers." This is profoundly alarming.

It is important to see this sort of straight talking, precisely because of the executive order last week that conflated criticism of the government with terrorism.
Pritzker: "In any other country, if federal agents fired upon journalists & protesters when unprovoked what would we call it? If officials marched down streets harassing civilians & demanding their papers, what would we say? I don't think we'd have trouble calling it what it is: authoritarianism"

TikTok will be co-owned by China and Trump allies, Paramount was sold to a pro-Trump billionaire who's also set to buy Warner Bros, X is owned by an apartheid-bred fascist, WaPo and Meta are owned by Trump-cowering billionaires, and Murdoch owns the Fox empire. Here's why media has a liberal bias.

One of the strangest things conservatives try to pull is creating this fake character of a Democrat/liberal who abandoned the party/leftist ethos and went to the right, because of how the left behaves. Such folks don't exist, so they have to invent them.
If you're not totally aware of how bots try to sway minds, here's a good example.

The remarks weren’t “about Charlie Kirk,” they were about how this administration is using Kirk’s death as an excuse to shut down critics … and they responded by proving him completely correct.

Becoming increasingly clear we’re gonna have to build a parallel infrastructure for all the media we really love. The reason all of this is happening under the color of law is hyperconsolidation, dissent being traded straight up for merger approval, or fear of harassment.

Sally, are you not familiar with the concept of rhetorical violence?
One of the reasons I'm not familiar with his views is that I find they've been inaccurately or incompletely reported. When I do listen to him in full, he speaks with civility, and his full context has usually been lost. This disappoints me in my profession. That is what I'm saying.
You admitted you're not familiar with his views but are saying he argued with civility. Which one is it, Sally?

Cuz it sounds to me like you're defending him, and that's pretty disgusting and embarrassing.

Just thinking about how the right made up an entirely fictional left wing character that resulted in so many bomb threats and the like and nobody will face consequences. But people on the left who accurately clocked the victim’s life work lost jobs.

Update from outside Broadview ICE facility in Chicagoland—

Even after feds killed a man a few towns away today, a small group remain to finish their 7am-7pm protest.

SRT takes the dwindling numbers as an opportunity to unleash less lethals on a protester with a mobility aid sitting on the ground.

This is such a perfectly condensed little parable of the horrors of the bullshit machines: a completely ignorant and illiterate shibboleth against standard punctuation, born from nothing and threatening to take over in no time—meme as prion chewing holes in the brains of a generation
Working with a student on her story, I recommend using an em-dash. She says she can't, because professors will think she's using AI. She says that's a tell now. Is it? Is the hopeless race to outsmart AI causing us to lose bits of language and punctuation?

If this was true, then wouldn’t this indicate a profound failure of “social networks” ostensibly designed to promote friendship and connection? A confession that “we made billions while being remarkably awful at our stated purpose, and only made things so much worse”? Galactic self own.
Mark Zuckerberg says Meta's chatbots will supplement your real friends: "The average American has fewer than 3 friends ... but has demand for ... 15 friends" (h/t x.com/romanhelmetg...)

The whole “Is he serious?” debate is poison.

It’s a politician’s job to talk seriously to us. It’s our job to take them seriously, and to judge accordingly. If you want fun play Minecraft.

I am exhausted with people who can't admit when they were wrong--whether they misspoke or made a misstep. I am exhausted by the doubling down and the unwillingness to change. The idea that altering your course if it's not working is "flipflopping" is a fucking plague on politics.

Read this thread. Especially if you aren’t an artist.
And then we're back to people who don't understand the system destroying people's livelihoods. Because to you or me, enamel pins are a luxury item. But to my independent artist friends, enamel pins have been the thing that made their careers sustainable.
Enamel Pins are mostly made overseas. Most 'US based' companies that make pins are just middlemen.

Also I understand that enamel pins are not a critical item, but a lot of artists make a good chunk of money from selling them.

Tomorrow, a certain online mega-retailer launches a book sale, just days before Indie Bookstore Day on 4/26. This is no coincidence; Bookstore Day is one of the largest revenue drivers for indies.

Indies need our support to thrive & build community spaces for all...mega-retailers do not.
