I chatted with Gigi Edgley from Farscape before a very-delayed flight to a con we were both attending, and then got a ride with her to the convention hotel.
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

I've said this before, but one of the reason why DIE HARD works when so many imitators fail is because of how it feels like every human being on screen has a complex inner and outer life that this moment is just glancing upon. It's filled with little three-dimensional moments that give it life.
Die Hard is a diamond of a film. I couldn't write something that tight in a million years. It also would not occur to me to shoot air ducts and cubicle farms with anamorphic lenses like some kind of crazed lens-flare wizard, but that's why I'm not Jan de Bont

Along these lines-- I would love to hear some of the unsung gems from the 2000s and 2010s that you adored and deserve more love.
A lot of writers have busted their butts all year to publish great fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and journalism.

Consider sharing their work today. Consider what you send people's attention to.

I went to an event at the Troublemaker Studios lot, which is basically a city block of the Alita: Battle Angel set.
Tonight in the December Comfort Watches: Alita: Battle Angel, which answers the question: what would it be like if a cheap Cannon Films sci-fi action film from the 1980s was given a $170 million budget and 21st Century special effects? Let's find out! Together!

Ok, since this has come up four times in the last three days:

REPUTABLE LITERARY AGENTS WILL NOT CHARGE YOU MONEY.

IF A LITERARY AGENT WANTS TO CHARGE YOU FOR AN "EXPEDITED ACCESS PACKAGE" THIS IS A SCAM.

No literary agent who is going to get you a deal is going to charge you upfront. They make a percentage. That is how it works.

If someone says otherwise or tries to "upsell" you, they are scammers.

There's a thing in Media Discourse that I don't understand the mindset behind: That only ideas "planned from the start" count.

We're seeing this in Stranger Things discourse now, where people are saying the larger arc "wasn't planned" because an old pitch deck talks about an anthology concept.

And Tiny Tim, who did NOT die, and all it cost was the life of one Romulan senator, one criminal... and the self-respect of one Starfleet officer. I don't know about you, but I'd call that a bargain.
And Tiny Tim, who did NOT die, is-- and always shall be-- your friend.
And Tiny Tim, who did NOT die, is gonna need a bigger boat.

"Do school visits, that sells a lot of books."
"But I don't write children's or middle grade or even YA."
"But [AUTHOR] did school visits all the time!"
"He writes middle grade."
what is your least favorite piece of writing advice and why? 👀

I wish I could remember the grad student who taught my creative writing class in college; he had just published a Very Literary Novel and was considered A Big Deal, but he is GONE from my brain, except his disdain of genre, and his weird musings about what "lhasa apso" could mean.
I had one (in grad school)who literally yelled at me to knock it off with the genre garbage because that trash was an embarrassment and would never get me anywhere. Years later, as the most publicly successful writer from that program, I was asked to speak at his funeral, and I uh, gently declined.

Hey I know this is probably obvious but super duper don't use AI marketing tools to attempt to sell or pitch books, are you out of your mind?

They're *books.* you sell them to people who *read.* have some respect for their ability to spot slop.

Both my physical and mental health are rough right now. Most days, the pain is overwhelming.

If you'd like to do something for me? I have a request.

Do something kind for someone else. Invite an extra person to holiday dinner. Donate to mutual aid. Help your sister pack. Anything for anybody.

It's shocking to me how normalized things like ChatGTP are outside of writer/artist circles. My wife's students-- adult professionals taking Spanish by choice-- almost ALL use ChatGTP for something, either business or personal. I cannot fathom, but yet there it is.
This is one of the reasons I remain horrified by seeing @historians.org suggest "ways to use gAI" that included this:
