Neurodiversity, Leafs, but mostly random things that strike me as interesting and leave me wondering how I wound up with a pocket full of unusual rocks again.

THIS. This is women’s reality in this world. It is time right now to face it and blow this system up and burn it down. This will take all of us who aren’t actively working to keep it this way. Examine your role in allowing it to happen, then work harder to support the innovative bravery of women.

In my article, I quoted something from Stuart Hall's "Culture, Community, Nation," an essay first published in a 1993 issue of Cultural Studies. He writes:

"It should not be necessary to look, walk, feel, think, speak exactly like a paid-up member of the buttoned-up, stiff-upper-lipped, ...

Every day there's a headline like "President's fire safety officer says we're going to set everything on fire and if you think that's bad you're woke"
Unreal: "The EPA is moving forward with approvals for pesticides containing 'forever chemicals' as an active ingredient... The agency also announced plans to relax a rule requiring companies to report products containing PFAS and has proposed weakening drinking water standards for the chemicals."

It's the way that Twitter's new location feature exposed the fact that most of the "Japanese nationalists" on Twitter were from Europe and that most of the big MAGA propaganda accounts were from Russia/India/Bangladesh so Elon shut that shit down literally just hours later lmaooo

A friend who teaches theology shared with me a post about CS Lewis's Mere Christianity, which discusses foundational Christian logic across denominations. It reminded me of Dale's tweet below, and I wanted to share some thoughts here regarding modesty and respectability, which are often hot topics.

Twitter pays people based on engagement (views, retweets, comments, etc). It appears that many MAGA accounts are based abroad and they use AI technology to generate low-effort rage bait.

My guess is that this will get worse as AI tech improves. For instance, fake videos of minorities doing crime.

Grand opening, grand closing.

X quietly disabled a new feature that showed which country an account was posting from when it revealed that lots of popular right wing MAGA accounts were being run from foreign countries like India and Nigeria.

I love this man so much. He's been the soundtrack of most of my life.
Stevie Wonder releases “Uptight (Everything’s Alright)” 60 yrs ago today.

At 15, the child star was in danger of being a has-been. His voice was changing. Motown execs “would give assignments to the various producers,” said songwriter Sylvia Moy. “No one wanted Stevie.”

The song saved his career.

Sharing the deep knowledge (baking sheets are better, or hotel pans with lids if you've got them). Also heed that safety stacking chart: raw meat & poultry on the bottom, cooked foods & veggies up top! Don't give anyone salmonella for Christmas.
Oh wait this is actually a good idea

Okay, time for a much-requested thing: a THREAD OF THREADS. I've now written dozens of these sciencey threads now, and it's increasingly easy to lose them in the scrum of new stuff on here, so - here's a roundup.

First: the mystery of the BONG BONG BONG: bsky.app/profile/mike...

OK, this is wild.

In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them.

It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*.

What the HELL?

Socialism is what they called public power.

Socialism is what they called social security.

Socialism is what they called the growth of free and independent labor organizations.

Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people.

Arguing with JD Vance feels like taking the bait but still:

1. Per capita GDP is not a measure of "standard of living"
2. US GDP/capita is highly skewed by the outlier ultra-wealthy 0.01% class
3. Canadians, as a median, earn more money, work fewer hours, and live longer than Americans
JD Vance shares some opinions on Canada:

A rebuild is incredibly unlikely to result in better high-end talent than is currently on the roster.

Leafs’ best chance at playoff success is hot goaltending + 34 going supernova. I have been bearish on this core for quite some time, but they’ve backed themselves into this being their only path.
