This morning I spent time looking up citations for a student. By the time I got to the third (with zero results), I asked where they got the list, and the student admitted they were from Google’s AI summary.

Honestly though I’m relieved I don’t manage interlibrary loan anymore?

Automation is concerned with the edges of things, with interfaces and input and output flows. Many things which appear the same to humans by virtue of having very similar centres can have very different edges.
i can never find a good way to phrase this, but: the way that every time a piece of work is automated, the nature of that work is transformed, and parts of it slip into or out of the defined nature of that work

The discussion of Wes Streeting talking about how there're too many ADHD diagnoses (which parallels RFKs' bullshit about it) feels particularly pointed as I take my blood pressure today for a state-mandated check-in about whether I'm faking having ADHD for the drugs.

like i have been saying, if you have ADHD you should be standing with trans people on their medical rights for basic moral and solidarity reasons but also the practical reason that you can fight at their barricade or you can fight at ours but it's the same fight
then, the transphobes , feeling victorious at how many people they have made unhappy and despairing in the previous week, move on to anything else that has a spectrum and the possibility of more colours than they can conceive - such hateful people - they cannot understand anything that is not THEM

At Pearson the Air Canada people saw my wife's ankle brace (sprained it 2 days before the trip) and wouldn't take no for an answer when she was offered a wheelchair.

It did make the customs a lot faster.
A constant blazing terror that somewhere, somebody might be getting a free cheese sandwich. Or indeed brief use of a wheelchair.

You are ABSOLUTELY NOT going to regret listening to this bird:
A male rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) in winter plumage.

Ptarmigan is from Gaelic 'tarmachan' meaning "croaker". The p- was added when people mistakenly assumed it was a Greek word.

A bird forever warning people: "A werewolf!" (just in case of werewolves).

It is an absolutely delightful irony that the richest man in the world is universally acknowledged to be a huge fucking loser who not a single living person envies in any way at all
Remember folks: if you have any small amount of artistic talent, any sex appeal, or can make your friends laugh, the richest man on earth is crying screaming throwing up because he can’t be you.

I wrote about why MAHA especially hates the hep B vaccine in this article.

Basically, they believe "good" women don't get hep B, and so there's no need to vaccinate babies for it.

My employer, Dartmouth College, today boasts it's 1st Ivy "to launch AI at an institutional scale." It is doing this by partnering--"more than a collaboration"--with Anthropic, a company that stole the books of many faculty, me included, which many of us are suing.
