What welfare tells us about decay and hope

Systems of benefit and credit are means to manage populations. I'm thankful that vestiges of social capitalism remain for the vulnerable, but hope lies in new ecclesial politics not worn-out statism. Last week, I wrote about my afternoon of struggle with the welfare system on behalf of my severely disabled sister Helen. This was annoying but, in the end, we have cause to be grateful. Helen is now receiving universal credit and remains supported by the state. But her case also raises questions of power, politics, and hope.
