Absolutely fantastic new paper from @katiehiggins.bsky.social "CEO peer groups reveal without a doubt that therapy culture has reached the top tiers of the business class. In fact, their version of self-help is in many ways more cooperative and less individualistic than the mainstream" but... 1/2

I quite enjoyed writing this.

'MAGA is not a coherent agenda or ideology but an unstable identity movement of a minority of Americans. A “powerful” individual in such a context seeks image and status over actual control or domination.'

What do we do with scandalous scholars?

I went to a great conference of the Centre for the Study of Bible and Violence this week and wrote this post.

Liberal-International-Order question of the day.. Does the new US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act guidance which prioritises national economic interests violate article 5 of the OCED anti-bribery convention? Or have states always done this and hence the LIO was and is a simulacrum?

Of all the Queen Elizabeth memorial proposals, this one is the most central Asian.

Last week, the Indulging Kleptocracy tour went to Geneva to brief a special session of the UN on illicit finance and Paris to speak to the OCED on the book. Thanks to hosts and fellow speakers.

A short essay on what the trade war tells us about America's political economy under Trump.

My intuition is that the key distinctions to make are not between these terms, which necessarily overlap, but between a comparativist approach where the object is national and an IR one where the national is a part of the transnational object of analysis. Here's how we do it in #IndulgingKleptocracy

Here’s how this plays out. Companies pause, add the tariff to the price for the American consumer, and only deliver items where that price is paid. Within weeks, undelivered and hugely expensive items will be a political reality. Then we’ll see that Trump’s power is less than he thinks.

I spoke at National Presbyterian Church in Washington D.C. on “Global Security and Christian Theology”. Many in attendance were US government workers in security, foreign policy and development who face job insecurity and questions of conscience. I hope my words gave some encouragement.

It's out today! Many years in the making. Our @tenaprelec.bsky.social Tom Mayne @oxunipress.bsky.social book, Indulging Kleptocracy.

The UK’s indulgence of kleptocratic elites from Russia and Eurasia is an acute example of the phenomenon of professional enabling.

Continuing the serialisation of my book Security After Christendom (published this year, but completed in 2022) to remind myself what I wrote and consider whether it stacks up.
