there's a moment in PARADISE LOST where Satan arrives in Eden and realizes Hell isn't a place; it's a thing he carries within him and it'll follow him wherever he goes. and i think about that when i see these awful rich men whose monstrous wealth has enriched them not at all

I've never sat the Bar exam but as someone who has sat some hard exams, I have some excellent methods to secure success. You can access my wisdom by paying a proportionate amount of income tax and enrolling at an institute of higher education. It's really a good deal.

Just wasting my train commute reading about the insane 1990s critical backlash to Veruca Salt, a pretty neat grunge band that happened to be fronted by two women. "Selling out" was such a weird idea to be so widely embraced

Cutting courses in architecture, maths, public health (5 years out from a global pandemic!), modern languages, and theology among many others. The United Kingdom is allowing vandals to destroy one of their few remaining world class sectors over relatively paltry sums of money.

I made a “how do you do, fellow kids?” joke to someone in their mid 20s who, it turns out, was too young to have heard of that meme.

So “how do you do, fellow kids?” is now an example of “how do you do, fellow kids?”

Jimmy Carter's advice to a young person.

My nephew Matthew shared this letter with me yesterday. Five years ago, he wrote to all the living presidents and asked for advice on how to participate in public service. Only Jimmy Carter responded. A precis on how to live a life of service.

It is good to be reminded that there are good things that are getting better.
I have a friend on the Mizen peninsula - which is about as remote as it gets on this island - who can go into the Big Town (Bantry) do his shopping, have a pint and a sandwhich and get brought back 50 yards from his front door - it's changed his life.

If you are someone who is deeply distressed by the rising anti-immigrant violence evident across the nation, then my colleague, Sophie Manaeva, writes today in the @irishexaminer.bsky.social about one concrete push back that you might not have considered: faith communities.
JCFJ's Sophie Manaeva writes:

'If public services and community leaders are not connected or engaged with each other, a vacuum is created. Within such a vacuum, misinformation and fear fester.'

Actively working with FBCs is essential to building stronger, healthier communities!

Interesting thread but I do seem to remember there being some kind of a city that is so important in the Hebrew Scriptures that the entire story rotates around it...
1. In the wake on Mamdani’s win, we’ll see a lot more far right anti-urban sentiment. Here’s a thread on its roots and evolution.

The idea that the city is evil and corrupt, and the countryside innocent and pure, goes back a long way: to Theocritus in Alexandria, and to the Old Testament. 🧵

There's been a great deal of debate about how safe Dublin city centre is, but when we @dublininquirer.com looked for data to resolve this, we couldn't find much useful – so we commissioned a survey to try to add some facts/data to the debate. Today we've published five articles about the results. 1/

A typical European car is parked 92% of the time. It spends 1/5th of its driving time looking for parking. Its 5 seats only move 1.5 people. 86% of its fuel never reaches the wheels, and most of the energy that does, moves the car, not the people.

Sound efficient?
