There are some magic little lands out there in the world.
In 2023 I became obsessed with videos of dads in cargo shortswaiting in parking lots during Taylor Swift's Eras Tour. So when she came to town, I grabbed a camera and headed down to talk to them. I thought it'd be funny. It turned out to be something else entirely.

It's Festivus, so I'm going to air some grievances.

1. If you're going to write a year end story about how scientists responded to authoritarianism and *NOT* include @standupforscience.bsky.social in the write up or cite that the photo you used as your header is from one of our rallies...that's bs.

Great news in the fight against antimicrobial resistance!

Two oral antibiotics have been approved by the FDA for uncomplicated urogenital gonorrhea. As Neisseria gonorrhoeae is becoming resistant to all known antibiotics, such breakthroughs were urgently needed. (1/4)

This is really cool and important.
Some of the longest-lived organisms on Earth aren’t whales, trees or corals, but microbes buried deep in the earth. This eye-opening essay examines the slowest lives on Earth, asking what such lives mean for how we define life itself @karenlloyd.bsky.social

NSF is about to dismantle NCAR at Russell Vought's direction to protect the fossil fuel industry. It's hard to communicate just how much NCAR does, so let's take a look: I've never worked at NCAR, and I've worked with NCAR researchers once ever. What scientific discoveries has NCAR made possible? 👇

Did anybody ever actually write up the "Heng Effect" (where adding variants to your pangenome graph can *reduce* its usefulness for samples unlikely to contain those variants)? Or is it just deep vg lore known only in our lab?
