Ha, I THOUGHT that was Portmagee! I have stayed there several times while doing fieldwork on Valentia Island (seen in the background across the water in this photo). Of course this is marginal given the serious content of the article, but it's just nice to see the place again.

It's not a mistake. The brazenness of the lie is functional: it becomes an additional insult, thrown in your face. They are telling you that they will never be held to account, and thus don't even need to pretend to honesty.

Same here. A big part of my international research community is based in the US, and important conferences happen there regularly, but I wouldn’t consider visiting again until/unless the regime falls. It would be genuinely dangerous.

Senate of the Roman Empire? Much longer than that: their last recorded session was in 603, long after the fall of the last emperor. And the separate Senate of the Eastern (Byzantine) Empire kept going into the 13th century.

It's worse than that. Beyond the qualities of the individual president, there is the deeper issue of dependability. We used to be able to trust a consistency that transcended individual presidents - but no longer. A long succession of good administrations will be needed to rebuild this.
