My wife and I pay for life insurance even though we have never died. I pay for fire insurance even though my house has never burned down. That's not because we want to throw money at insurance companies. It's because THAT'S HOW INSURANCE WORKS.

So if I’ve got this right, ordinary Americans in all
walks of life got squeezed for 40 days so that we could somehow win …

what exactly?

Except that no one will ever take the threat of shutdown from the Dems seriously ever again

For #Readers: The Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge is pretty darn great. It has the 339 books (novels, nonfiction, plays, poetry) that Rory of the The Gilmore Girls* is shown reading. I'm only at 23% so I need to get to steppin'.

* I've haven't seen an episode...yet.

A really nice telling of the rise of Arabidopsis - mentioning so many of my heroes! We should be grateful for their vision and persistence.
Arabidopsis thaliana was always an unlikely candidate for the limelight. But 25 years ago, the diminutive thale cress launched the botanical world into the molecular era.

There’s a cult of ignorance in the US and always has been.

The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that “my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.”

It's weird. A hundred years ago, only rich people owned cars while everyone else owned horses. Now only rich people own horses while everyone else owns cars.

A well meaning relative called me on Sunday (late) morning and chided me for still being in bed. They encouraged me to do all the things I planned for the day. I replied that, until they called to wake me up, that is precisely what I was doing and will return to doing after I hung up.

Trump's tariffs are hurting us in two ways:

First, the obvious: Higher costs → either lower profits or higher prices.

Second, more subtle (perhaps bigger): We’ve signaled we’re an unreliable partner, so allies are reorganizing supply chains to avoid us. That's hard to unwind.

When people celebrate the individual genius of folks in science, they should also
mourn the collective loss of genius of folks who were actively discouraged or disadvantaged from a career in science because of the same person(s)
