Some personal thoughts on 2025, letting go, finally starting to make videos and sticking as true to myself as I possibly can
2025 Retrospective One of my 2025 goals was using my voice more both literally and figuratively, what I landed on being the best for me was giving video essays a shot I bought a mic, learned audio mixing, figured out I had a lisp that increased dislike for my own voice and unlearned it, a lot of ideas came and went A lot of people came and went too. But I think I got a little better at letting go? It feels more and more like learning when to dig your foot in and when to just move on is a lifelong task, and without any 100% foolproof way of getting the right answer every time Creatively, though? I think I learned more about holding on than anything. I tried leaving my comfort zone and doing different things and I'm better for it but it wasn't long until I felt like I was neglecting that creative spark, like there was a dam instead of free flowing communication with my inner self There's a lot of tension there between language and actual communication, I taught myself english to play untranslated games but also to hide what I wanted to say from those around me, it worked back then Now, I'd say a good half of my daily communication is in english, including at work I love being latina but I guess it's the grounds where I can relate the closest to the term "impostor syndrome" on. Throwing away either language simply wouldn't be true to me, and it's not like any language is really free of the grip of colonialism it's not an achievable ideal But the feeling is there, and it's only going to grow wider the more I don't channel that into creation, the more I don't sit back and listen and work it out through building community like I've always know artistic expression can help facilitate for me On YouTube, I'll add ptbr audio once I'm eligible for that feature and once I figure out if I'll do the transcripting myself or not subtitles will be there There are games I wanna make with the setting close to home, there are local art expos I wanna be a part of, artist alleys, animations, all sorts of things. I'm trusting myself to know when I'm ready to take those kinds of leaps and leaning on my friends when I need to rest, I've let go of the perfectionism of wanting to figure out the best thing to say to them every time we talk which only led to talking less The same goes for posting! I finally feel like I've struck a good balance of being cautious and accommodating of my sensibility and just allowing myself to share silly things when I want to share them! That said watching the hate comments about the fighting game I'm working on also proved to me I have decently thick skin, certainly more than my poor coworkers who don't know much about the internet world. I know we're putting care into every move of every character and that's good enough for me I am definitely not cut out for being an influencer or anything but as long as I can boost my art to do most of the real talking for me I'll be good. The first video I'm working on is 50% recorded, I can even listen to it just fine now that I've gotten used to my own voice! It gave me pause to delve into a fandom as contentious as dr but the rabbit hole of Tetro Danganronpa was really deep, and I completely stumbled on it in a perhaps ill-advised trip back to fanganronpa land for nostalgia's sake I learned to let go of the more marketable idea I had earlier in the year and to embrace writing this script that deals with very real emotions and topics that affected me and that I know affect a lot more people deeply, I wrote 90% of it before the vonbabbit stuff came out but I feel like what I have to say is worthwhile if not even more so now I hope The only uncertainty I still have is over whether or not I should make art of the cast Given the AI designs, I tried sketching a quick Watari redesign and think there might just be a sweet spot between staying true to the characters for the sake of my presentation and different enough that the creator would not feel ownership if they saw it but we'll see Either way, it's probably safe for me to say I won't get it done before New Year's, or maybe I'll do it all in the holiday break and be conflicted over whether to hold on to it until January or let it go live immediately, don't know, but I work on it every day and cannot wait to let my thoughts and feelings leave my head and reach somebody else Thanks for reading 🧡

Definitely -- though, reflecting more, I think one thing it makes me realise is that people who might be quieter or who I don't automatically imagine 'oh, they must be a good person'? They might have a bunch of goodness that I don't know about, which feels nice as a way of viewing things

The absolute NADIR of Magic story. I'd rather Test of Metal be canon. Genuinely, Forsaken might have been better. But there's a cool thing some of the art does with hidden Φ signs in the art. A good visual motif. Pity about the rest of the set.

Brian Valeza) Probably my favorite version of that thing I was talking about. Symbolizing Phyrexia's power to pervert anything against its original home world, this Sun Empire warrior's staff shows the evil symbol on the wall in shadow. Vertex Paladin (illus. Fajareka Setiawan) Xerex seems to be a plane of optical illusions. I think it might be neat to visit it in more of a full set. Invasion of Segovia (illus. Edgar Sánchez Hidalgo) The front side of battle cards uses a super-wide style since they are placed horizontally on the field. So here we get to see a Phyrexian invading Segovia, a plane in miniature. A bunch of the world's tiniest sea monsters muster to the world's defense against a giant foot.

I don’t think having so many ideas is necessarily a good thing. It makes life very complicated. This thread just made me think that the appeal of LLMs might be “I could have ideas!” And then suddenly you think you invented time travel and start emailing physics professors.

12/26/23 - On being grateful I didn’t transition early in life - or - “Cognitive behavioral therapy? More like, gaslighting yourself that you feel good” People online often express regret that they didn’t start transitioning when they were younger. I started transitioning at 27 going on 28, and am just starting to successfully be read as female by random strangers in public at 29. Unlike most trans people my age, I’m actually happy that I started transitioning when I did, and here’s why. I didn't have to go through the anguish of gaslight-y parents saying it's just a phase and I'll grow out of it in X more years. I'm seven years post-college, and sure, they're 'sad' that I dress the way I do, but there's nothing they can freakin do about it! I feel like I'm in charge of myself and my confidence is growing. I got my driver's license forever ago, back in 2010 when I was in 10th grade - for all the time that I’ve been living as a woman, I’ve had the ability to pick up my backpack and purse on a whim and make plans with friends, or go to coffee shops in town whenever I want to - if Mom says something hurtful, I don’t have to be trapped with her like I would’ve been if I had transitioned in highschool. I’m old enough to get up and go without having my parents keep tabs on me at all times, or constantly check in with them. I feel like I'm old enough to understand the importance of actually putting effort in and practicing things like makeup and fashion sense, and to not spiral in despair from not immediately seeing results - voice training is similar, it's as hard as learning an instrument. I feel lucky that I know that you’re supposed to look for the joy in these things and be playful. I feel lucky to know that certain mirrors or shitty lighting is a major source of dysphoria, and that just because you might feel like you look awful after getting out of the shower and wiping off the mirror in the early morning, other people won't see or think that, especially if I eat breakfast and drink water, which makes anyone look infinitely healthier. I feel lucky to know that cis women have an incredibly wide range of facial features, and even if I have certain things I don’t like about myself, it’s very possible to find lots of examples of cis women with those same features. See also: tall women exist! Women with broad shoulders exist! I could hyperfocus and spiral about these things, but they exist in many, many people who are perfectly happy anyways. I feel lucky to know that I have a new puberty on my hands, and that a steady, healthy diet, exercise, and regular, ample amounts of sleep are just what it needs to work its magic. All people, both cis and trans, become dysmorphic and get a screwed up self-image if they use stuff like AI face filters. I feel lucky that I know this and don’t become obsessed with that, and chase multiple expensive, small facial surgeries. I’m also glad I don’t have the money one would need to do that. I feel like retail therapy (like, buying expensive toys or luxury goods) or chasing those kinds of nitpicky small surgeries can be a sort of denial or a thing that you do to cope with hating yourself. I feel lucky that I don’t hate myself in general. I know that if there’s something I want to try, like makeup or voice stuff, I can force myself to do it a bunch and desensitize myself to the fear, while some might never do it and wait and wait and wait until [imagined future date where they pass 100% flawlessly]. I know that it’s very possible to find cis women that look just like you. For me this is Ariel Bissett - I look just like her and we have the same hair! There’s a fairly popular trans influencer on Instagram I follow who looks just like Caroline Polachek! I don’t look like that at all… but I don’t mind, I know that I’m a different type of person that’s a different kind of cute! Caroline Polachek gives ‘skinny, radiating confidence, dark straight hair, probably uses luxury beauty products’ and Bissett gives ‘cozy academia drinking coffee and browsing tumblr in 2014’ and I LOVE THAT! (I do hope to radiate confidence eventually though…) I know that hanging around other women is a great way to pick up mannerisms and cues and vocal quirks. I'm prescient enough to know that if I keep my dose steady over enough time, I’ll turn out just fine and that its a marathon, not a sprint. I'm self-aware enough to catch myself when I start spiraling (and write in this diary!) And I know the healing properties of getting the heck offline, and hanging out with friends IRL, and how invaluable it is to push yourself out of your comfort zone and have new, exciting experiences. It’s 2:30 AM again and I’m hyperfocused on writing all of this. I’m gonna turn the computer off and hope I fall asleep

“We Need To Be Afraid of AI/AGI” — AI Doomerism Is A Grift So, I want to be clear about something: if there was a conscious computer that was smarter than human beings that could do anything a human could do on a computer, that would be bad. Similarly, I think it’s good for us to have some discussions about what might happen if we do create an artificial superintelligence. We should absolutely have regulation and guidelines in place, and have at least thought about some of these things, even though AGI is likely not to happen in your or my lifetime, if it’s even possible, which it is very likely not. In any case, do we need so many discussions? Also, why are none of the discussions about the implications of a conscious computer? Or about what AI is doing today? And why does nobody that’s worried about AI talk about how AI is not “learning” in any way, shape or form? All of these bullshit AI scare pieces hinge on an AI that does recursive self-improvement, an AI that can learn on its own without human supervision that is entirely theoretical and may never happen. Then again, if you lead by saying “yeah so we have no proof that this is possible,” it might be much harder to get those cool speaking engagements. Oh, that reminds me of somebody. Let’s Talk About Geoffrey Hinton Geoffrey Hinton — Nobel Prize in Physics Winner and the “Godfather of AI” — famously left Google in 2023 because, and I quote: In the NYT today, Cade Metz implies that I left Google so that I could criticize Google. Actually, I left so that I could talk about the dangers of AI without considering how this impacts Google. Google has acted very responsibly. I think everybody needs to remember that the very first thing Geoff Hinton did was to say “actually, Google has acted very responsibly,” and I imagine that has nothing to do with any Google stock he might or might not own. I assume when Hinton said that he was referring to in 2020, when The Intercept reported that Customs and Border Protection “accepted a proposal to use Google Cloud technology to facilitate the use of artificial intelligence deployed by the CBP Innovation team, which the CBP’s deputy assistant commissioner said was “an absolute game-changer” in 2024. I also assume that Google was acting “very responsibly,” in Hinton’s eyes, when it worked with the CIA in 2020, or when it bid for the Joint Warfighter Cloud Capability Contract (which it won along with a few other cloud companies), per WIRED, in 2021, which added that Google had “made it clear they want to pursue business with the Department of Defense.” You know what I assume Hinton thinks is “very responsible”? Google investing in multiple different weapons technology companies. Hinton has spent several years doing talk after talk about the terrifying prospect of Artificial General Intelligence — the theoretical idea of a conscious computer — talking about the “risks of artificial intelligence,” and if you’re wondering what those are, here are quotes from his latest talk with Bernie Sanders, per Business Insider: "The people who lose their jobs won't have other jobs to go to," he told Sanders. "If AI gets as smart as people — or smarter — any job they might do can be done by AI." "If the workers don't get paid, there's nobody to buy their products," he said — a reality he says tech executives "haven't really thought through." "[AI] knows thousands of times more than us already.” "We can see clearly for a year or two, but 10 years out, we have no idea what's going to happen." "Almost all the experts believe that it's inevitable that if we don't blow ourselves up or have massive pandemics or something like that, they're going to get smarter than us — and nobody knows what's going to happen then." "A person using an AI can still do critical thinking, or they can try and dump everything on the AI, and that's terrible," he said. "What universities have to encourage is people to use AI well." "If you have an army of drones or humanoid robots, then rich countries can invade poor countries, and the poor countries' people may die, but the rich countries' people won't die," he said. “Anthropic Is More Efficient Than OpenAI” In A Way That Makes It Somehow Profitable In The Future I simply do not think this is true. Per Fortune’s recent Anthropic piece (emphasis mine): Even more remarkably, Anthropic is generating such growth without spending nearly as much as some rivals—at a time when massive capital expenditures across the industry are stoking anxiety about an AI bubble. (OpenAI alone has signed AI infrastructure deals worth more than $1 trillion.) That’s in part because Anthropic says it has found ways to train and run its AI models more efficiently. To be sure, Anthropic is nowhere near profitable today: It was pacing to end 2025 having consumed $2.8 billion more cash than it took in, according to recent news accounts citing forecasts provided to investors. But the company is also on track to break even in 2028, according to those projections—two years ahead of OpenAI. Let me lay some things out: I estimate that Anthropic will make $4bn to $5bn this year, so around half of what OpenAI makes (I estimate OpenAI will make $8bn to $10bn, max). Based on my reporting on its AWS bills, Anthropic spent $2.66 billion through the end of September, a month where it spent $519 billion. As a result, it’s fair to assume that it spent that much in the remaining three months of the year (if not more!), bringing its AWS bill up to about $4.2 billion. If we assume that Anthropic spends about as much on Google cloud, that brings its compute costs to $8.4 billion. Assuming Anthropic makes $4.5 billion in revenue, that means that Anthropic spends about $1.87 per dollar of revenue just on compute. Though OpenAI’s spend is likely much higher — I’d peg its inference costs at $12 billion this year and, on the low end, its training costs at $10 billion or more — it’s likely spending $2.75 in compute per dollar it makes, which is worse, but doesn’t make Anthropic’s math better. This “efficiency” story also doesn’t make sense based on Anthropic’s funding. OpenAI has raised $18.3 billion this year for what is supposedly a “much less efficient” operation - Anthropic raised $13 billion and $3.5 billion for a total of $16.5 billion. If it were “so much more efficient,” why would that be the case? Anthropic has done a really great job taking advantage of reporters that don’t want to think too hard or consider its math, but the most egregious thing I’ve read is that Anthropic will “only burn $2.8 billion” this year. Considering Anthropic has now promised $21 billion to Broadcom for Google TPUs, the argument might be that “Anthropic needs to pay for those chips,” but if that were the case, Anthropic would have to raise far, far more. That, and Broadcom CEO Hock Tan made it clear that the backlog of revenue wouldn’t start coming in until 2027. I think the truth is simple: Anthropic is as ugly and nasty and disorganized and costly to run as OpenAI. If I’m wrong, Anthropic’s IPO will say so.

I mean, we're all influencing each other all the time, whether intentionally or not. Like if someone knits a cool thing and posts it, I might be influenced to try to knit it myself. But they're not an influencer

Couldn't fit my Rob Reiner thoughts into a regular post. But he was great in every way you can think of
THE PRINCESS BRIDE is probably the movie I have seen the most times, and I never stop being delighted by it. And that alone would be enough to make Rob Reiner one of my favorite directors. But he made so many other amazing movies in almost every genre. And the thing that I think was consistent was his respect for both the screenplay and for the audience. William Goldman and Stephen King loved and trusted him completely, and that wasn't the case for other directors. STAND BY ME might have the best cast performance by young actors ever, and you know it's because those kids trusted Rob too. Just a beautiful man who made beautiful art, and we are all richer for him having been amongst us, and poorer for his loss.
