This gorgeous ancient Minoan fresco from the island of Santorini, Greece, dates back to 1600 BCE. Incredible details for art painted over 3600 years ago.

Imagine if we put this much work and money into housing the homeless….
An astonishing piece of work. Notre Dame cathedral has been transformed.
Imagine what a 12th Century peasant would have thought?

I'm interested to ask historians what ND interior decor would have been when first built esp re painting murals etc

Happy St Andrew's Day
30th November is the Feast of Saint Andrew, patron saint of Scotland. Scotland's emblem is a thistle, and a legend tells that when barefooted marauders stepped upon these prickly plants their cries alerted the Scots, foiling their attempt to invade. #StAndrewsDay #Scotland #folklore

I find early medieval church wall paintings fascinating, I suppose due to the stark contrast of their absence from the vast majority of churches today. Churches were the theatres of their day (no offence intended to religious people).
We have now passed midnight in my time zone, & we have entered the feast of Saint Martin of Tours, one of the most important saints of medieval Europe. For the occasion, I'm sharing this old blogpost on a depiction of him from Skive Church, Northern Jutland: my-albion.blogspot.com/2019/05/achr....

Do we really need to swear on social media? I find it off putting and rarely repost or reply.
Gentler language gentler world and more focus on the topic in discussion without it imo.

⚠️ Pontypridd has been hit by devastating floods and our wonderful independent bookshop, Storyville Books, has seen much of its stock destroyed.

If you’re able to buy a book from them, this would go such a long way to help support them rebuild in the aftermath.

And if you're a bit older...recording the BBC Radio1 Sunday Top 40 Singles chart on your cassette player with a wobbly microphone lol
I had a tape with half of a Disneyland Paris Christmas special hosted by Michaela Strachan (?), Sleeping Beauty, and the Gnomes TV movie that my granddad recorded off Granada at Christmas 1992, and the adverts were an integral part of the experience. What a time to be alive …
Kids today will never know how it feels to own a copy of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom taped off the TV at Christmas and you've watched it fifty times so you know the order of the adverts off by heart and you just flat-out watch them every time.

Who was the sitter for this portrait and who painted it? You'll be surprised. I met @emmarutherford.bsky.social, who solved the mystery, and Alan Derbyshire to find out more about the remarkable women - yes, women! - who painted the Tudors. Listen here:
