In terms of what cures are being lost:

- Epstein-Barr virus is perhaps the major trigger for multiple sclerosis
- herpes simplex virus causes cold sores, genital herpes, infections in babies, deadly meningitis
- shingles virus causes an intensely painful disease

Genuinely, I am just in awe.
This was incredibly painful to sit with, thinking about the countless slaves, desperate for freedom.

But even in the darkest of times, there are still such good people.

This is truly just incredible.

I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

It’s so much weirder than other Big Institutions destroyed by VC, because the Hudson m’s Bay Company essentially *created* the nation state of Canada. Survived for 355 years only for late capitalism to devour it. It’s so so so much more strange than Toys R Us or whatever.
minor drama:

a year ago, the historic Hudson's Bay Company was destroyed by venture capitalists, and they were the traditional olympic outfitter. The company was of course evil but they came around to acknowledging their history in their later years, and the 2018 olympic outfit was fire:

kind of funny that an olympian said they are here to represent "compassion, respect, and love for others" and some people automatically knew that was a statement against them

I’m really enjoying seeing how our new solar panel set up is functioning, even with snow and ice still covering part of our roof. Look at it go!

Gamifying things like this for me is infuriatingly effective…
