Taha , Jess Nachman Zeana Hamdonah,7 Thomas Ross Griffin,15 Anima Adjepong,16 and Jeffrey Montez de Oca17 In this paper, our scholarly collective traces how athleticide—defined here as the obliteration of sport, sporting cultures, and athletics through the killing, arrest, detention, or disabling of athletes, coaches, staff, officials, and administrators and the destruction of athletic infrastructure and history—has been part of the US–NATO-funded Israeli state’s genocide of Palestinians in Gaza since October 2023. Although much of the literature focuses on the philosophical, ethical, and political foundations of events that are conventionally described as “genocide,” little scholarly attention has been paid to genocide in the disparate fields that make up sports studies. Even less attention has been paid to the role that sport, sporting cultures, and athletics may, or may not, play in genocide and genocidal campaigns. To address this gap, we advocate for the development of a sociology of athleticide as one possible point of departure for advancing sports studies’ understanding of the role that sport can, and often does, play in times of genocide and the impact of state violence on sport. There is no neutrality, there can be no neutrality or objectivity about Palestine : : : . I foresaw what we are in the midst of now globally in my first year at the University of Toronto. That academic year was 2008-2009, that is the year of the financial crash. In addition to taking stock of what the immediate implications of the USA-driven, global financial crash were, I was overtaken by an ominous feeling: I thought of 1929. And I thought of what followed 1929, including the rise of fascism in Europe and WWII. That ominous feeling stayed with me ever since, and, as I saw what I had foreseen unfold, it has only grown. Now we are in the thickening thick of it.

A 16 year old San Antonio kid was essentially killed by a football coaching staff during an offseason workout.

Players were subjected to punishment drills and repeatedly noted the distress of their teammate, to no avail.

After he collapsed, the rest of the team was compelled to continue the drill.
According to the student, who asked to remain anonymous, Lawson began slowing down, stumbling and struggling to stand. His eyes appeared to be closing, and his speech became slurred as practice continued. You could tell for a while that there was something wrong with him,” the student said. “Even me and the kids next to him were saying something wasn’t right. The student said players attempted to help their teammate up and down during the drills, believing at first he was simply exhausted in the heat. As his condition worsened, the student said Lawson tried to speak but was unable to clearly communicate. The student said Lawson eventually collapsed while standing. Trainers were called to the field and moved the teen to the side, while an ambulance was requested. During that time, the student said the rest of the team was instructed to continue practicing. We had to watch it happen while we were still doing the workout,” the student said. “We couldn’t stop.

I'm honestly speechless.
Examining the bodies returned to their people after the most recent so-called ceasefire, Palestinian doctors noted that, in some bodies “the rib cage and ribs were clipped with a sharp saw—a medical saw, a bone saw—and the sternum, along with the central part of the ribs, [were] lifted to allow for the removal of the heart and lungs without damage to the organ being taken.” Organ procurement, with few exceptions like skin and cornea, requires that the body be either alive—via brain death—or just-dead—via circulatory death. It is plausible that some Palestinian prisoners’ torture led to brain death. It is also possible their torturers felt no need to wait. Palestinian witnesses have reported that some prisoners were alive at the time they were taken for organ extraction. In one batch of bodies, the organs removed were those commonly transplanted: heart, liver, lungs. The transplant surgeon waits for a person to die; the soldier can’t. The settler surgeon wields his mastery over the body to serve the state. Here, the surgeon acts as—is—a soldier.
