Quinn/Grim. she/her/hers, xe/xir/xirs.

I have the soul of a writer somewhere. Probably hidden on the top shelf. I have a lot of thoughts on a lot of different topics; I’m an amateur folklorist & a gamer. These things interact more often than desired
Pinned
Dusting this off; hi! I’m Quinn (or Grim if that’s easier to remember with the handle) and I’m generally a nerd. Most of my academic training is in dissected literary analysis and Hellenic studies, sometimes taking the framework I had in the latter and applying it to other spheres.

The fact Nvidia is investing in OpenAI so it can pay Oracle so Oracle can pay Nvidia is the kind of deal that is hilariously and openly indicative of the AI bubble eating itself - yet tech and business journalists seem absolutely star struck by ✨BIG NUMBER✨

My 2024 book, Practical Archaeogaming (Berghahn Books) was used by Anthropic without my consent. I’ve joined the suit. If you’ve published something, use the lookup tool provided in Alex’s thread 👇
There are tons of graphic novels, academic papers, film and TV scripts, & prose novels/nonfiction on the LibGen list Anthropic used.

As settlement approaches, make it easy for the class action lawyers to contact you! Here’s how

Part 1: is your work in Libgen?

When they screamed "States Rights" when debating abortion, those of us with knowledge of history knew it was a lie.

Because the Confederacy had lied the same way about slavery.

The pretense is gone now. But if ever they lose the power they now possess, it will return.

In the name of States Rights

the most useful thing LLMs can is force us to do is to reconsider the way we use linguistic dexterity as a proxy for intelligence

another way in which LLMs make me feel like an alien as compared to their many fans: I find their default fawning conversational tone to be intensely, viscerally repulsive and suspicious.
for my specific style of Totally Normal Brain, a person acting weirdly fawning and inexplicably congratulatory like an llm would make me immediately skeptical of anything they say, so llms emulating that behavior as an intentional design choice is like wow i fucking hate this.

It honestly keeps reshocking me that the bloke who had a row with the Holocaust museum about his dogshit Holocaust book, the bloke who went TERF after being criticised for writing a similarly awful novel about trans kids, and the bloke who plagiarised Zelda by mistake, are all the same bloke.

All I think about when I hear people say that it’s bad taste to dance on Hulk Hogan’s grave is that Emmett Till’s monument had to be replaced with a 500lb steel bulletproof monument because white people simply won’t stop riddling it with bullets. So now it just has tons of dents. From bullets.

Something about the way LLMs build in the idea that to find something out, you shouldn't read an already existing text that other people have also read (ew!); you should get fresh text generated just for you. Each time, new disposable text.
