ICE is gone but DC cops are still out at V and 14th, getting heckled by an angry crowd after one person was supposedly arrested by feds in a roadblock aimed at immigrants

Situation on 14th St and W St. NW, with federal agents -- no specific agency identified -- pulling cars over for checks. They arrested a Black woman in this car.

BIG crowd of people shouting at police.

"Fuck you!"

"What is wrong with you!"

"You don't need to terrorize people like this!"

I can see my old building in this photo
Police have set up a checkpoint and appear to be stopping every single car on 14th st NW, between W+V, here in northwest DC. Some cars are being pulled over after being stopped.

Some police are wearing “HSI police” vests (Homeland Security Investigations)

NY lawmakers, take note.
The guy arresting you shouldn’t look like the guy in a ski mask robbing a liquor store. It’s why we’re advancing legislation to put a stop to secret police-style masked law enforcement.

Brad Lander gets the @ezraklein endorsement: "He has far more experience and far better relationships inside New York City government than Cuomo does. And he has a far deeper record at pushing progressive change through the machinery of the city than Mamdani does." www.nytimes.com/2025/06/18/o...

One farmer in rural Texas says none of his employees have wanted to come to work out of fear of being picked up during an ICE raid, “whether they are legal or illegal.”

There's a debate about if Lander getting arrested was a stunt? Of course it was a stunt, and it was a good one. He's got the race's best photo op, he raised awareness that they will arrest anyone without a warrant, and most importantly he put his body on the line to do good. Nothing wrong there.

For those outside NYC, Brad Lander isn’t just a mayor candidate, he’s also the NYC Comptroller—the chief financial officer and auditor of the biggest city in the country.
Federal agents just illegally detained Brad Lander in New York City
Here's a longer video of Brad Lander's detention just now inside 26 Federal Plaza as he tried to walk a man out of immigration court, by masked federal agents.

"You don't have the authority to arrest U.S. citizens," Lander tells ICE agents as they hustle him out
Hi, this is Meg Barnette, Brad's wife.

While escorting a defendant out of immigration court at 26 Federal Plaza, Brad was taken by masked agents and detained by ICE.

This is still developing, and our team is monitoring the situation closely.

This has been reported in the Hollywood trades, but not in politics pages:
Apparently the vintage Army uniforms that were used in Trump's big military parade were rented from Hollywood prop houses. They didn't support the parade but were happy to get the work during tough times for production.

WE HAVE QUESTIONS…

This is a kidnapping. No uniform, no badge, civilian car. Who are they?

ICE? Sanctioned bounty hunters? Either way, they’re grabbing people without warrants.

How often is this happening, and why aren’t more people talking about it? Congress?

Russia was kicked out of the G8 in March 2014 exactly BECAUSE it launched its war in Ukraine by invading and forcibly annexing Crimea.
Trump with Mark Carney: "The G7 used to be the G8. Barack Obama and a person named Trudeau didn't want to have Russia in, and I would say that was a mistake, because I think you wouldn't have a war right now if you had Russia in."

It does feel a bit like RCV is turning into an electorate-wide LSAT, complete with essential test-preparation courses.
Where ranking all five matters is for the people who want to rank lower-polling candidates high up. If you rank them 1 and 2, for ex, it absolutely does matter that you keep going on your rankings to make sure your ballot doesn’t become irrelevant in later rounds if your first picks drop off.

I am embarrassed to admit that I did not know before now that ICE has not had a Senate-confirmed director since the Obama administration ended. Given ~everything~ that has happened since 2017, how is that not a scandal?

Based on crowd-sourced records of No Kings Day event turnout, and extrapolating for the cities where we don't have data yet, it looks like roughly 4-6 million people protested Trump across the U.S. yesterday. That's nearly 2% of the U.S. pop!

Our unofficial estimate is that around 4 million people attended a protest event yesterday. Anti-Trump resistance is outpacing 2017.

It follows @theguardian.com exclusive that the agency was told to “push the envelope” to meet Trump’s 3k arrest quota.
