Heading into 2026, I'm still looking for fulltime or contract work as a senior writer or narrative designer. If you need someone who can write sharp characters, poetic prose, and emotional stories, I'm available! You can find my portfolio here: www.hazelmonforton.com

It's been ages since I was in school, so I'm sure there are new resources... does anyone have suggestions for a Cliffs Notes type thing (besides CN itself, of course)? Something if I'm reading an older literary work on my own that points out stuff like historical context and other teachery stuff?

quote this with what you've accomplished in 2025, no matter how small:

-escaped the purgatory where I'd been trapped since the 2017 total solar eclipse
-went swimming a bunch
-tried 3 new sports
-ate a lot like seriously a glorious amount of food
quote this with what you've accomplished in 2025, no matter how small:

- published my second standalone book (novella)
- traveled without Stella twice
- finalist for a Nebula Award (short story)
- finalist for the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award (same story)
- ended up on the Hugo Long List (same)
Quote this with what you have accomplished in 2025 no matter how small

- Had one short story published
- Wrote most of a novel
- Made comics
- Posted like 360-odd musical improvs
- Learned to play the Greek lyre
- Kept my apartment's humidity in the safe zone

You may have heard there are no cats in America, and the streets are paved with cheese. However, in California, the Pacific Ocean flows with champagne and shrimp.
Are there no copy editors?

In a writer networking workshop I run, I ask attendees to think about the coolest person they want to meet.

Then I ask what they’d offer them as a peer (this could be anything!).

If there’s no answer, it isn’t time to network in that room.

…a specific type of attendee rarely has an answer.
This shit is made up, actually

"packed like sardines" is now a paleologism.

Anecdotally, sneaking into aspirational writing spaces before you're ready can do more harm than good.

I behaved really badly the times I've done it, because ignorance combined with the pressure to "prove yourself" creates poor outcomes. Peer friendships are more sustainable.
Talking to one of these types at a con who asked how I 'got in' with so many 'famous writers' who I'd been talking to and I said "we made friends before anyone knew who we were decades ago by striking up interesting conversations and enjoying each other's company" and he kept re-asking the question.
They have come to the convention hoping to "break in" and then find themselves -- shocker! -- a "nobody in the book world." Yeah no shit! We all are! I have gently told guys like this a million times that it takes most of us *years* of hard work but they do not believe that could be true for them. +
