only in the atl will you get santa telling the whole arena "it's swag surf time, ho ho ho!"

and only in atl will they play "knuck if you buck" after a fight on the court

To add to this - THE MEMORY HUNTERS is not inspired by the Middle Ages. Valerian IV does not wear plate armor. But she does have a sword, is sworn to guard her charge, and went to combat school. And I wrote her specifically to fulfill the princess/knight trope. Sapphically.

Okay. In an attempt to clear a couple of items off the TBR, I am going to read a chapter of a book whenever I lose focus instead of getting on socials. I anticipate either getting a lot of work done or reading more books. Win-win.

Obligatory cat pic tax of Pooka, my classic tabby Ocicat who was 100% pure menace (and also, ultimately, just a cat)
December 21, 2025 at 9:02 PM
I really thought this was gonna be a Wagnerian opera post

I see so many people online claik their cat is an Ocicat mix and no, I'm sorry, the breed is very tightly controlled and documented. Your spotty cat with no papers is a lovely spotted DSH.

My Ocicat was classic tabby.
I would like to articulate one of the BIGGEST misconceptions about cat breed genetics by talking about the NEBELUNG!

An extremely rare breed with only SIX(6) in the whole US, and no breeders, yet one that thousands of folk online are convinced they own.

Your cat is NOT any breed, and that's okay.

Merriam quits the high-stakes world of lexicography to teach at a college in Springfield, MA…where Webster just became the head librarian.

She shows him that ‘love’ isn’t that hard to find…if you know where to look it up.

“A Merriam Little Christmas 2: Collegiate Edition.”
“Have Yourself A Merriam Little Christmas”

Merriam, a career-oriented lexicographer from the city, returns to her small town for the holidays and meets Webster, a ruggedly handsome librarian, who shows her the true DEFINITION of Christmas.

broke containment so i am now gonna take myself away from this website. please keep ConCurrent Seattle in mind for awards like Best Related Work or community awards; no genAI was used in panelist vetting, panel selection, or in anything at all. ConCurrent Seattle: Powered by Electric Meat Sacks

of course, the best spell check remains the dictionary, like Merriam-Webster. I consider myself an excellent speller and I still check the dictionary constantly. Thanks for having my back, M-W!

I'll offer a technical opinion for anyone who finds it helpful: spellcheck (and basic grammar checking like what's been in Word for more than a decade) are pattern marching. Even "they're/their" checks are based on looking for tokens in the rest of the sentence. The scope is the text being checked &
Spell check existed long before genAI and in its most basic function is not genAI. Spell check is code. It's a function. It checks against a database of available words. Spell check in certain programs, however, may have been made worse by running it through genAI.

ICE moved their group of 200 traveling gestapo into Columbus, Ohio, and for the last few days my community has been scrambling, connecting, activating and showing up in the most magnificent way. There are so many different emergency trainings, protests, etc. that I physically can’t go to them all.

I don't have a Nebula. I will probably never have a Nebula. But I do have the dignity and self respect of never having used fuckass genAI.

I claim all my mistakes. I won't let genAI make my mistakes for me. I'm gonna fuck up in a way only I can and I'm gonna own that.

So I switched to Qobuz and imported my playlists and guys, I'm never going back to Spotify. Qobuz might not have everything but the fidelity?! This is what music used to sound like!

like... i guess... how did they not anticipate the reaction they got?
The @sfwa.org has already revised the Nebula rules to disqualify works written wholly *or* partially with LLMs.

That was quick.

Anyone who was lucky enough to attend some or all of Concurrent knows what an amazing and uplifting experience it was.
It's awards eligibility season and we at ConCurrent are definitely eligible for one award: the Hugo Award for Best Related Work. However, if you think we're a good fit for other awards, please do consider us! Short fact thread incoming. 1/

We wanted an inclusive, accessible, safe event for all, which meant everyone was masked and we had multiple air filters going. And attendance was completely free thanks to our generous donors.

For our work, please do consider us for awards! 3/3

ConCurrent was dreamed up, planned, and executed in eleven weeks as a one-day convention running alongside WorldCon. We emphasized panel topics relevant to current issues in SFFH and welcomed an incredibly diverse set of panelists. We were categorically against all genAI usage from the start. 2/

Timely reminder that @giganotosaurus.bsky.social does not accept stories written or edited with LLMs at any stage. No genAI use is tolerated.

And if your story is accepted, it will be edited by humans.

Jay does fantastic work year after year and I'm delighted to be on this list both as a novelist and as a part of the @giganotosaurus.bsky.social team! We've had fewer stories than usual, so this means a lot. ❤️
