Apart from the fact the leader of the right mocked Reiner, one small difference is that Reiner's day job was making movies that people loved, while Kirk's starting point was creating enemies list of professors to be fired or harassed. These are not the same things.

A quick sidenote about this; one reason I stay on X is specifically because of exchanges like this, where @davidjbier.bsky.social and I got a prominent government official to make a claim so outrageous that it’s now ricocheting around the internet and actively undermining official PR campaigns.
Bovino, the man overseeing mass deportations, publicly declared that we must all have our papers on us, at all times, or we could be stopped, harassed, kidnapped, and detained, as they did with the man in this case, who is a US citizen.

Also, any military personnel going along with this stuff are bad and should not be coddled. Sorry! I don't believe being in the military itself is inherently wrong, but these goons aren't "serving the country," they're mercenaries and have agency in deciding to follow evil orders.
