there’s no amount of good faith that beats bad faith. you beat bad faith with fire*, not argument.

*definitions are situational
Look, there is no way to avoid TPUSA. You can give trolls a C-, B, B+. It won't matter. They can even get an A overall but if you give the feedback the very constructive OU instructor did, you're on the list. The assignment could be 2% of the grade (it might be in that class!). There is no defense.

The thing about laws and legality is once you reach the tipping point, the fascists rewrite the laws. The Holocaust was strictly legal under German law.
similarly "torturing prisoners" is the kind of thing that you'd assume is an illegal order...except these freaks made sure to create a legal justification for it. not illegal now!
"Don't follow illegal orders" would be more meaningful if Democrats had prosecuted literally any of the prominent war criminals of the last 30 years instead of, you know, fucking campaigning with them

People say they want to manufacture real things in America again BUT they complain that it’s “inappropriate” and “not productive” to talk about how we need lots of guillotines. Like make up your minds!

I’m not sure what to make of this survey, honestly? If you’re a young person in solidarity with Gaza, or against police killings, or you’re trans or queer, would you have reason to trust the news?
A lost generation of news consumers? Survey shows how teenagers dislike the news media
You don't have to tell Cat Murphy or Lily Ogburn about the attitudes of young people toward journalists.

many people saw what was coming when the Christian right started redefining discrimination as “religious freedom” and now here it is deployed (at best) to defend a failure to do the assignment and (at worst?) as workplace discipline, for existing in a manner unacceptable to Christian nationalists

Honestly I think one of the biggest "steps in the right direction" we could make as a country is to make America subject to the jurisdiction of the ICC.

Yeah, at some point you have to say, "sorry, this is a psychology class. Your religious ideas are certainly welcome and valid, but responding to a psychology paper with a teleological argument is better-suited for philosophy or religious studies." Like the least they could have done is
if this is discrimination, I’m genuinely unsure what you’re supposed to do when a student responds to a prompt with some religious gibberish

This is bananas.

But also faculty please now more than ever make your rubric on memos/ writing super explicit.

This would fail in my class because it doesn’t “meaningfully engage readings.” Protect yourself as much as possible from engaging on politics.

Hope this prof sues the shit out of them.

The "campus free speech types are hypocrites" line of commentary is very well-worn, so I won't belabor the point much further. But it feels worth noting that *unions* are the organizations actually fighting for freedom of speech on many college campuses...

One thing Gwen understands more than most about the Texas and Oklahoma crack down on trans people existing in the university is that this is part of a broader movement by TPUSA and astroturf right wing groups to push society to make having a job while being openly trans impossible again.

Welp. RFK jr got what he wanted thanks to this careless journalism: headlines written by nation's top media outlets promoting an unproven link between covid vaccines & childhood fatalities. All the next-day rewrites & fact checks won't get nearly as much play as the initial anti-vaxx propaganda.
News media has to do better with headlines that present false and unverified public health claims.

"There is no precedent for this ever happening"

Well, we already live in unprecedented times anyways, so why not push to make them unprecedented in a good way?
While this usually isn't the intent, "no one will ever be held accountable for this" doomerism is an excuse not to try.

There'll be at least some accountability if enough Americans work for it. And this time really is different. Doesn't guarantee the aftermath will be, but it increases the chances.

Any college that signs a contract like this should lose its non-profit certification. They’re not colleges, they’re poorly run sports institutions.
Yet another reminder that the very best job in this world is failed college football coach.
