I teach bystander intervention for a living and have taught de-escalation to law enforcement.

Trust me when I say that bottle girls, gas station clerks, strippers, front desk employees at hotels and airports, baristas, etc. have better de-escalation skills than any cop I've ever seen.

Pretty wild that you have to be like, a graphic and web designer to tell your career and work story these days

I feel like we don't talk that much about the escalation of these aesthetics and expectations

You should know what your contract says because it will tell you what you can and cannot do. Because if they start pulling "well the letter of the contract says we don't have to answer--" then you know what your options are.

You should know what you are obligating yourself to do.

To me, one of the worst things about neurodivergence is that people don't believe you. When you fuck something up that makes other people feel like you don't care. And you're trying to make them believe that you really do care and it's just your brain not cooperating.

As many of us begin Christmas meal prep, allow me to share the advice that my ER nurse sister puts in the chat every year:

A dropped knife has no handle. Jump away. Let it fall. You can pick it up and wash it.

We had a goodish internet..

But forums were racist, the platforms you miss often stole willfully from the marginalized :

Forums require moderation that folks didn’t think was work , so moderators and their institutional knowledge never got systemetized

One of the challenges since I got my ADHD diagnosis is that I can't really tell if the issues I observe now are the same as they've always been, or if they're actually worse and I just don't have a good frame of reference. I forget things all the time now. But maybe I always have.

We joke about the Torment Nexus and all that, but...

The truth is science fiction warned us endlessly not to let fear control us.

"Fear is the mind killer"
"Fear is a path to the Dark Side"
etc.

Silicon Valley claimed to love SF, then built a machine to amplify fear as a means to control people.

Excellent rule for life in general, really.

Cops are literally trained to manipulate information out of you. And for all the chatter I see about their nefarious, underhanded methods for this, the truth is, most don't need to bother, because a lot of you volunteer that shit willingly.

ok but what is the spec or single source of truth for the data model

“we did not write one”

then how will i know what to test against

“what is the true face of the system before it was written?”

and then eva was immediately enlightened

I think if you're not yourself a fighter in tech right now, you need to learn how to amplify, protect, and rally around the people you see whom you generally believe are pushing on the right directions. I will say I don't know that software engineering knows how to do this because it hasn't had to

This is correct. It’s VCs who spend their time doing drugs and inventing weird religions, executives who have boners about firing workers, and non-technical hucksters who are pushing this stuff. The vast majority of people doing actual technical work on the ground feel the way this piece describes
Okay, for the folks who asked: here's the majority AI view, writing up the reasonable, thoughtful view on AI that the vast majority of people in tech hold, that gets overshadowed by the bluster and hype of the tycoons trying to shill their nonsense. anildash.com/2025/10/17/t... Please share!

More than *anything* the people who actually know how technology works, who actually build things, wish that people would treat LLMs like every other technology, and be normal about them. Don't build a religion about them, don't force them on people, don't ignore the problems. Just be normal.

it's kinda weird that all the software i am expected to use for work are all written by distributed teams, go, python, postgres, linux, chrome, k8s etc

and despite being told "the best teams work in an office together" i don't know of any software i use that's actually written that way

I think we really should stop using antifa and just fully say anti-fascist and get them saying they are against anti fascism. Using antifa is giving them some distance and I genuinely think some of their base don’t even know that’s what it stands for.

My publisher’s been very patient. I’m not doing everything I said I’d do to promote this book (out in a few weeks) because I’m an organizer in a city under federal attack. My days are full and emotionally exhausting. Any help getting the word out means a lot. It's a book people need right now.
