We're just going to keep having pilot projects like this until capitalism eventually falls. Giving houses to the homeless is cheaper than anything else. Giving people healthcare is cheaper than not. Giving people basic income is cheaper than not. Taking care of society is financially prudent.
A program in Flint, MI, gave $1,500 to any/all pregnant people and $500/month for the first year of their infant’s life.

Among the benefits, those babies experienced lower rates of prematurity and low birth weight, which resulted in fewer NICU admissions, saving the city of Flint $6.2 million/year.

Just to clarify - the main thing the Trump administration is making cheaper is....cocaine?
The Trump-Miller administration's single-minded focus on migration is starting to impact the availability of drugs in the US, according to this detail from a very good investigation @wsj.com published today.

“While PIRC says ‘Portland’ in its name, it is a statewide rapid response network that can send local responders to the site — anyone in Oregon can call the same number.”

Immigration advocates say if you see ICE targeting someone, knowing what to do in the moment is critical to protecting immigrants. It’s hard to know what to look for, but this guide can help you better understand how to be an effective bystander in Oregon, and your legal right to do so.
What to do if you spot ICE in your community
Amid President Trump’s immigration crackdown, local community networks are the first line of defense. Here’s what Oregon advocates say you should do if you see agents detaining someone.

Being arrested is never good, actually, and majority approval for the actions being prosocial is not the primary purpose of protest.
There was a bunch of posting about how No Kings had terrible opsec because people were posting pictures of themselves at the protest. And like, guys, if you're doing things that are not illegal and 90% of people would not find antisocial, then getting arrested is like, the best protest outcome

Freelance illustration gigs drying up. Ad agencies using Midjourney instead of hiring human artists. Costume design turned over to AI wholesale. Good work vanishing.

These are the stories of working visual artists, who describe losing jobs, wages, and hope as their clients and bosses embrace AI.

There is an irresponsible post circulating that (FALSELY) suggests that live rounds may have been fired at protesters at a Chicago-area ICE processing center. I am in communication with people who were on-site. The shots were pepper balls. Still terrible, but not live rounds. Pls don't spread panic.

NEW: Mercenary spyware is coming to the US.

ICE just quietly unsuspended their contract with spyware maker #Paragon.

Remember them? Caught earlier this year being used to hack Italian journalists.

This is bad, let's talk about how we got here 1/

this story is incredibly lazy and frustrating, esp considering a local indie reporter was *shot in the head* + protestors allege broken bones from ICE officers. but i guess a small cut behind an officer’s ear is what they actually mean by “if it bleeds it reads.”

My latest: Why some potentially contaminated drugs are still allowed into the U.S., despite FDA knowledge of issues like filthy labs and falsified records.

We dug into the data and identified 70 hospitalizations and nine deaths related to these drugs.
NEW: A ProPublica investigation found that for more than a decade, the FDA gave substandard factories banned from the United States a special pass to keep sending drugs to an unsuspecting public.

Many medical supplies are manufactured outside of the US. I would buy additional KN95, N95 and KF94 masks now, as well as any medical supplies you regularly rely on. Even basics like bandages, Aquaphor, medicated lotion and pimple patches. Order that stuff asap.

This is genuinely an important article. The two main lessons from Hungary appear to be:

DO NOT WAIT

DO NOT UNDERREACT

Authoritarians like Orban and Trump rely on opposition being unwilling to believe that what is happening is actually happening. That’s their window.
