They didn’t like it, but they had to go along with it.
This New Yorker documentary about the 1988 UK government ban on broadcasting the voices of Sinn Féin and I.R.A. leaders is pretty good but they show *that clip from The Day Today with no explanation and no indicator that it is satire.

extremely exciting to see Labour doing a worse job pushing ID cards than the imaginary Labour did in the first episode of series two of Stephen Fry and John Bird’s underrated Absolute Power

Not to take anything away from a smart, effective interviewer, but: the reason Isaac Chotiner is so feared is because he prepares for the interview and asks follow-up questions, techniques that make him like unto a cat on an island of flightless birds
I want to reiterate that I think journalism is important, and political journalism -- the question of what people want to do, how they plan to do it, and what the stakes are if they succeed or fail -- is extremely important. At a lot of the major news organizations, it basically doesn't exist

This is what happens when you don't tax rich people, I'm dead serious. You have to keep the money moving in rational ways or it all devolves to hustle
this is a good joke but this also speaks to a truth about 2025 America: the growing, horrible sense among many people that running scams is the only path to basic financial stability

this is, of course, utter poison for human society
Feels like I'm leaving money on the table by not doing a scam or swindle of some kind. Would you guys buy a car for $100,000 if I pretended it can drive itself. What about a fake currency

If Females Could Get Pregnant, There’d Be An Abortion Clinic On Every Coral
Despite the tide of aquatic opinion flowing in favor of reproductive rights for all, marine society still gives male seahorses very little say over what happens to their own bodies. Instead, we are treated as passive baby-making machines. Meanwhile, if it were the female seahorses who could get pregnant, there’d probably be an abortion clinic […]

"Rolling Stone, WIRED, Teen Vogue, and your favorite tech blog leading the charge against fascism while your parents' Very Serious Papers of Record dig their own graves" sounds like cringe Millennial fan fiction from the Livejournal of someone whose parents banned them from using Limewire, and yet,
I've been a fan of Mike/Techdirt for years - he championed a lot of the adaptive stuff we were doing with NIN in the 2000s against the grain of the industry (embracing torrents, Creative Commons, pay-what-you-want albums, etc).

Great to see Techdirt firmly meeting the moment. Hopefully more follow.
Wrote up something about Techdirt's recent coverage, and why (whether we like it or not) we need to be a "democracy blog" now, rather than just a "tech" blog (not that we've ever been just a tech blog).

This story is *the* story and it impacts everything else.

the purpose of banning section 230 is to ban all political, sexual, or critical speech from the internet

this is to silence grassroots movements that don’t have the explicit sanction of the wealthy and powerful

you are an abject moron or a liar if you believe it has any other purpose
It’s time to repeal Section 230. We must be able to take social media companies to court for addicting kids and enabling drug trafficking on their platforms.
Sen. DURBIN: Fentanyl often gets to our kids and young people through the internet.

Section 230 absolves social media companies from any responsibility. “That has got to end.”
