watching Wake Up Dead Man right now and man, it's really exactly that, huh
incidentally watching a fake medieval movie tonight, and thinking about how the way the Catholic Church is used in movies and TV is very similar to how games just make up fantasy religions

Imagine if just by refusing to comment, you could stop any story from running. You would literally never find out anything unflattering about anybody. It amounts to asking people for their blessing to publish your reporting about them.
CBS News chief Bari Weiss pulls 60 Minutes story

Weiss said investigation had to include comments from Trump administration

60M's ⁦‪Sharyn Alfonsi‬⁩ said multiple US agencies refused to comment - and this lets WH veto coverage

Strong 2nd to this, and I would just add that the modern world is much more dependent on extremely accurate and precise timekeeping then most people realize (all cell networks require it, most using gps disciplined oscillators)
NIST's time services going down is less about "oh no things are going to break" (we are very resilient to muti-second drift even if people didn't have backups like GPS) and more about "oh no this is a crucial service we are being reminded has multiple underfunded and vulnerable chokepoints"

there is a perfect hyperdimensional jewel made of every word a human being has ever written, and all the correspondences between those words. people mostly use it to get insane household repair tips or jerk off. i guess it basically runs the government now

Thinking about atproto login flow and I’m leaning towards the following:

1. No technical jargon, let the infrastructure fade into the background.

2. Identity is contextual, use language that reflects intent (writing as, reading as, etc).

3. Bring an identity or start a new one.

Thoughts?

Tomorrow, the Bstox closeout sales continue!

Books, appliances, furniture, everything is going if you're in NYC and need a last minute gift!
Passing this on from folks who are not on Bluesky: If you're in NYC, Bluestockings is having a final closing sale.

Come celebrate and grieve the closing of the store, and the sunset of Bluestockings Cooperative.

Books, appliances, merchandise, furniture-- everything is going.
Masks are required!

do not imagine Bluesky becoming like Twitter

instead, imagine the PDS becoming as commonplace as POSIX filesystems
one can also see the unexplored value of an artifact registry that can directly contain flexible and not predefined types of Posts that are intended to be human readable

release notes, yanked package notices, licenses, the project blog, whatever

no matter tho, we as designers/developers cannot get around the fact that we’re gonna have to specify *somewhere* on our sign in pages that either 1) it’s atproto/atmosphere based or 2) it’s bluesky

anything else is too confusing or ambiguous at the present moment

maybe years from now that changes
