When you break it down by county data, it’s one eviction filing per 309 people. Read the full story now at the link above!
February 4, 2026 at 9:06 PM
Evictions remained high in Spokane County too, with 1,794 filings in 2025 - accounting for about 7.5% of the state’s evictions. Spokane County is 6.99% of the state’s population, making the region overrepresented in eviction filings.
February 4, 2026 at 9:06 PM
The debate over the eviction prevention came the same day that the Seattle Times reported eviction levels have hit an all time high in Washington state for the second year in a row. According to data from the state’s Office of Civil Legal Aid, eviction filings in the state are up 47.6% from 2019.

Before landlords evict tenants solely for nonpayment of rent, they must now wait for at least 30 days before submitting a demand for payment, giving tenants a chance to engage with the eviction prevention program and access resources that could keep them in their homes.
February 4, 2026 at 9:06 PM
The program requires landlords to notify their tenants of a city-collated list of rental assistance programs and tenant legal defense programs when they sign or renew leases, any time landlords give tenants notice to pay or vacate and whenever they raise the rent.

While it’s still unclear why this letter was re-issued on Jan. 5, it’s likely sparked by increasing national unrest caused by ICE activities. The last time postal workers received a similar letter was during the COVID-19 pandemic and unrest after the murder of George Floyd.

Since council voted to accept it, the $1 million grant will offset costs that are already accounted for in the city budget, Police Chief Kevin Hall told the council. He said in the event the Trump administration demands repayment, he would send the money back.

The other no vote, CM Cathcart, worried about financial liability if the city doesn’t abide by the grant requirements. He also expressed skepticism about the supporters’ assertions that the Trump administration would not hold the city to the executive orders.

Two council members voted against the contract, both from District 1. Freshman Council Member Sarah Dixit worried about potential legal consequences of the city’s refusal to fulfill the conditions. “It makes me nervous to sign up for that,”she said.

Council Member Zack Zappone, who voted to accept the grant, noted other grants to fund programs like social services and housing carry similar stipulations.  ”The standard is to fight back instead of not accepting any federal funding.”
