I am still not over the fact that people are *volunteering* to be prey in a fox hunt because they find it 'fun'??

Dystopian fiction really didn't predict this one.

reminded of eric williams's observation about britain's relationship to its history with slavery. "British historians wrote almost as if Britain had introduced Negro slavery solely for the satisfaction of abolishing it."
holy shit: “Among the 2,000 UK adults surveyed, 85% were unaware that Britain forcibly transported more than 3 million Africans to the Caribbean, 89% did not know that Britain enslaved people in the Caribbean for more than 300 years” www.theguardian.com/world/2025/n...

A few weeks ago I was talking politics with a local, highly straight, bartender.

All the sudden he said: “Well, I think a big part of the problem is that so many of the people who would’ve been our progressive leaders died of AIDS & can’t help us now.”

And I’ve thought about that every day since.

Land acknowledgements are based in Indigenous practices?

The backlash against them among "progressives" who are seemingly unaware of this fact has been disturbing to see.
my wokest opinion is that land acknowledgements are fine. people knowing a little bit about the land you're on, even if one isn't invested in a land back project, is not particularly worse than the status quo, even if one comes by this info in a way that is somewhat cringe and forced
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.

Alice Munro was the hardest one for me to drop, and I still did.
"What if one of YOUR favorite politicians/celebrities/etc is on the list?" Did you all not notice how quickly we dropped Neil Gaiman when we found out about the things he did? Do you know how beloved that guy used to be and how loathed he is now? I think that right there should answer your question.

This.

We use our e-bike to take all kinds of trips with our kids that we would never take with our regular bikes.
The best brief explanation I've heard about e-bikes and "cheating" is:
E-bikes do not replace regular bikes; e-bikes replace cars.
I was approached by a lady outside the gym today while parking my bike. She was likely in her 70s. She had such great questions about the bike and then proceeded to tell me about her ebike.

She told me that she rode over 600 miles on it last year and was so proud of herself. She was so happy.

If you want to talk about community helpers who do a thankless and dangerous job, look to Crossing Guards.

These are our fallen heros. Much more so than other uniformed people who patrol.
A crossing guard was killed by the driver of a dump truck yesterday. absolutely heartbreaking.
Look at our intersections, look how hostile these are for people/children - this is what we continue to build and defend at all costs. These aren't accidents, these are results. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

The entire point of social media is being able to surround yourself with people who start posts with sentences like "Hi, shipwreck autist here!"
Hi, shipwreck autist here! It was in fact true at the time. The Edmund Fitzgerald also had a sister ship, the Arthur B. Homer, which had the same structural defect the Edmund Fitzgerald did and was quietly retired shortly after Fitz sank. She remains the largest ship ever scrapped on the Great Lakes
