Last week the Guardian published an open letter from some of the UK’s foremost Russia-excusers, attacking Fiona Hill and accusing the defence review she copiloted of “warmongering“ for recommending preparations to defend against Russia.

Today, a reply.

There is only one warmonger on the European stage: Vladimir Putin | Letter
Letter: Experts on Russia, Ukraine and international security respond to a letter that criticised Fiona Hill for her assessment of the Russian threat to Britain

I feel like ‘Morgan McSweeney was horrendously wrong’ will be the epitaph of this government.
In short, Starmer has taken a massive hit among Labour voters, for no gain elsewhere, while boosting Farage's popularity, including doubling his ceiling among Labour voters.

I.e., the political scientists were right, Morgan McSweeney was horrendously wrong.
Keir Starmer's net favourability rating has dropped 12pts in a month to -46, his lowest level ever, including a 34pt drop among Labour voters

All Britons: -46 net rating (down 12 from 13-14 Apr)

By 2024 vote
Labour: -5 (down 34)
Lib Dem: -13 (down 12)
Conservative: -76 (up 1)
Reform: -94 (down 5)

After praising France for other things, some scolding is also in order:

Now is REALLY not the time to link the UK-EU defence partnership to fishing rights

Countries including France are said to want to tie a new post-Brexit security deal to more beneficial access to British waters, potentially holding up military cooperation.

Ah yes, Main Street in 1956, when you could hang out with strangely dressed identical women in sunglasses, in front of the ATLEO, across the street from RELEA DLIKES.

Those were the greblmongs.

Quite. Britain needs to get access to Galileo PRS ASAP. I hope Whitehall knows that but I'd be surprised if it just isn't being pushed up the agenda because politicians and civil servants are still processing or are in denial about the implosion of the US as a reliable security partner.

His boss is literally firing out executive orders trying to shut law firms that oppose him and saying critical journalism is illegal. The hypocrisy is just wild (and kind of the point).

Exciting to watch Elon Musk pivot so elegantly from making his cars toxic to the demographic most likely to consider one, to making his Starlink a national security risk for all the governments who might have wanted it.

A lot of Americans, even liberal ones, underestimate how much anger is building up towards Washington among those British and German social groups who were once the most fervent advocates for the alliance with the United States
Seeing a lot of left-leaning people express shock at this, but it's entirely what I'd expect from the MoS, and their readers - not doing so is a classic example of not understanding your political opponents.

Probably going to mute / block the provisional wing of the EU Brexit commentariat. Twenty replies saying "you left, don't dare return to Brussels except to beg for forgiveness" get rather tedious. As well as displaying flat earth qualities of their UK Brexit ultra friends.

Many others already did.

Except the whole thing is characterised by geostrategic naivety. The EU has a choice as to whether its starting point is 'we must preserve our political red lines' or 'we need to make Europe as secure as possible'
My personal & subjective €0.02 as someone inside the Brussels machine is that non-Brit colleagues have v rapidly adjusted to the UK as a 3rd country in every respect, for good & ill. No special status as former member; no expectation or appetite for ‘re’join; but no bitterness or negativity either.

Appearing on Russian state TV, Apti Alaudinov tells Vladimir Solovyov that the invasion of Ukraine is just the beginning. He says that even after the conclusion of this so-called "operation," Russia will keep fighting until it ends up on top of the world.
