Reflections on the European Council decision to borrow €90 billion and lend it to Ukraine. Tl; dr: Ukraine benefits, but not enough; Putin & Trump will be encouraged; the EU & individual member-states have shown that it’s still too easy to intimidate them. 🧵1/13

Condemnation never did anything. It is another form of appeasement.

Only actions - wartime actions - have any real consequences that will help bring this war to an end.

All third parties trading with Russia must be blocked, sanctioned, attacked, sunk or otherwise punished. And it must be done now.
#EUCO strongly condemns support by third countries, and actors and entities therein, which enable Russia to sustain its war of aggression against Ukraine. In particular, it condemns the continued military support provided by Iran, Belarus and the DPRK, among others. /14

Spot the logic flaw?

The EU can keep on helping repair, rebuild and strengthening resilience of Ukraine's energy systems

whilst

Russia keeps on targeting and destroying Ukraine's energy systems.

Therefore,

We must help Ukraine win the war first!
which pose a serious threat to their safety and security. The European Council also calls for the mobilisation of all efforts to help support Ukraine in repairing, rebuilding and strengthening the resilience of its energy system. /16

Hooray for Labour finally finding their spine.

Just ignore that the EU holds all the cards, constant months of negotiations, Rejoining Horizon and more.

Me: This is why I keep constantly criticising the Guardian.

As some EU leaders lose sight of the big picture in Russia’s war of aggression, reminder of 2 of my pieces: this on consequences if Ukraine loses: www.cer.eu/publications... ; & this on what Europe must do to ensure it doesn't: www.cer.eu/publications.... Only change: funding UA is now more urgent.
Does it matter if Ukraine loses?
Ukraine is retreating and Russia is advancing, militarily and politically. Western leaders seem to underestimate both the impact of Ukraine’s defeat and the West’s ability to prevent it.

I'm so sick of that murderous bastard Putin & his meddling, for personal glory & to further steal from the Russian people, & others.
An Air marshal & the Chief at MI6 called him out this week but we don't see the action needed.
The greed we are all under attack from is international.
Support Ukraine
“something they’ve lost in previous historic periods & to take revenge” on Russia. Speaking at an annual Russian defense ministry meeting, Putin blamed former US President Biden for “consciously” unleashing the war in Ukraine & said that the “European little pigs” immediately backed the Americans.
