Y’know… Now that we’re on December’s door, I’m reminded once again that this has been exhausting and depressing year.

Yeah, there have been a few personal high points, but it’s all despite wading through a sea of muck.

The reason why this hurts so much is because every dubbing studio in the Los Angeles area has been hit with at least one wave of layoffs or a significant reduction in the amount of contractors that have been hired.

All that devastation to our economy, for this?
The only thing less human than these AI dub performances is the decision to sign off on them

A company this big can pay human actors a decent wage, not produce slop that intentionally removes the human element.

As someone who works in the tech industry--absolutely.

They are testing the waters. These are top-down orders. The ONLY way to stop it is a visceral negative reaction. Write articles. Post your rage. Email. Post. @. All those things.

Only you have the power to kill it.
Let me give some insight on this, as a producer in the dub industry who worked with major streamers, who's witnessed first-hand where this push for AI is coming from.

tl;dr: Only CEOs want this. Tell them how much you hate it. Be loud, email, call, @, post. You will kill this.

Yes, I did watch Wizard Barristers in the year 2025…

It’s not mind blowing, but I had a fun enough time with it. Reminds me how I’ve really come around on Umetsu’s designs and action sensibilities in recent years.

I’d dig if there were more creative swings like “Wizard Lawyers in Tokyo” out there

AI dubs aren't just an attempt to replace voice actors. Engineering, mixing, writing, directing, and QC are also cut, narrowed down to a single prompter.

When I write dub scripts, it is an exercise in musicality, translation, and personal life experience. A prompter understands none of that.

It's eerie seeing things we all kinda knew were coming actually come to pass, but I hope this continued discussion encourages people, rather than discourages them.

I'm glad so many are using their voices to condemn AI performances. Even when it's Amazon, you, me, we all have power as consumers.

Thinking about the AI dub news from last night again…

Parts of this industry have been attempting to weed the human element out every step of production.

Personally, I couldn’t care less about your cartoon or comic if you’re actively endangering the livelihoods of those working on the ground.

and to be clear: when I say 'production companies' i'm not talking just amazon, crunchyroll, netflix, etc. etc. I'm talking Aniplex, Toho, Toei, etc. Those guys would LOVE to never hire actors, animators, writers, the whole package, ever again. theyd do it in a second if they thought it'd work!!

the underlying idea-- and we're seeing it in every creative-driven field that AI tools are ruining the absolute shit out of-- is that art can be automated or replaced, but somehow the commerce that results at the end of the chain is sacrosact and must continue. i dont think thats gonna work...

This clip is really bad. Absolutely hollow. But important to remember also that as this tech becomes "better" and more advanced, simply it being "bad" isn't going to cut it as a rhetorical argument. Slop like this must be opposed because it's fundamentally anti-human, regardless of "quality"

surprised it took this long for a publisher to try this with a 'real' series. next we'll see a series with an AI-created original Japanese dub.

you folks would not BELIEVE how much the production companies want to do this. they want to never hire actors SO bad!!

ok maybe you WOULD believe it ☹️
Hey just so you know Amazon decided to give us an AI ENGLISH DUB of Banana Fish instead of actually hiring real voice actors
it is fucking hot garbage
