The new Frieren perspective trend has been really great. Fun seeing all sorts of artists put their perspective on it (even saw Obari make a joke post using some of his work on IBO),

and i'm partly humored how it sometimes brings Tomonori Kogawa into discussion, since he's known for that style.

Ranma 1/2 Nihao My Concubine (1992) (5/10)

There's really only two reasons to watch this otherwise nothingburger beach ep turned rescue mission. Gotta say that evil prince has taste in dresses, cause GYAT DAMN!

Tatsuya Nagamine is a big reason WHY I gave the One Piece anime another shot. I watched Film Z before being caught up, and Broly in theaters had me awestruck enough to finally catch up on Wano during COVID.

I will get to Heartcatch as soon as my current watches are done. 🥲
Rest in Peace, Tatsuya Nagamine. Your Directing brought the One Piece anime to new heights!

Were learning that Tatsuya Nagamine, the director of Heartcatch Precure, and one of Toei's finest creative voices, passed away over the summer...

Its honestly a shock... and so young, at just 54.

Rest in peace Nagamine... thank you for everything 😢

Typhoon Club (1985) (6/10)

Has some of the best long takes I’ve seen, yet it struggles to connect them together in a cohesive manner. I dug the atmosphere and sense of aimlessness when it came to these kids stuck at school, but sometimes it feels like deleted scenes got left in.

Star Wars Visions Vol. 3 (7/10)

BLACK is a masterpiece, and The Lost One’s is a good follow-up. But apart from these other two at the bottom, the focus on droids and sequel bait feels hollow compared to Vol. 1s take on the Sith Jedi Binary.

Silent Hill F (9/10)

Wish the replays diverged more drastically, but it shows how invested I was to get all 5 endings.

The way Ryukishi07 centered the horror on wedding blues, religious rites, and maternal trauma is something I'm gonna remember more than the tiresome combat.

Nobody (Lang Lang Shan Xiao Yaoguai) (7/10)

What if the mooks in Monkey King's adventure had their own chance at enlightenment?

There's definitely cutlural context I missed, but it was a cute little flick that ended on a surprisingly bittersweet note.

For all the bad effects Covid has done to Anime Discourse, it's a symptom of something undeniable.

Anime got a unique boost from the pandemic in that it was able to keep us spoiled for choice even in 2020. It didn't just survive the pandemic: it THRIVED!

Ballad of a Soldier (1959) (10/10)

Makima's biggest lie in Chainsaw Man is actually that this perfectly accessible tearjerker about a soldier reacquainting with civilian life amidst the war is some cryptic "you don't get it" cult film.

Ike always seemed to be the one that didn't wanna be in the black screen stream, so I applaud him for being willing to apologize to Doki.

Yeah, on IMAX this rips.

My mom was never gonna care for the action, but she was thoroughly impressed by Kensuke Ushio's grasp of different musical genres (she's a trained classical pianist).

As a fan of the action though, so much of the fights feel like watching a dance.

“Could you call this film a romance? It's a deceptive romance, that's based 95% on a lie. But that 5%. That 5% is enough to overshadow the rest.”

Beautifully put review of Reze

Sing a Bit of Harmony (7.5/10)

There's a good 40 min chunk in the middle where I got swept up in its magic. But much like how the kids had to cover-up this robot’s glitches, the rest struggles to balance its musical whimsy, teen hang-ups, and discussion on mechanical sentience.
