July 2024 - Labour are elected on the basis of Starmer being a dull but competent PM.

No drama just focused on fixing the basics.

November 2025 - Now the least popular PM ever Starmer announces plans for mass deportations, the seizure of immigrant wealth and the indentured labour of migrants.

The Sun has been told Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will on Monday propose confiscating jewellery, watches, necklaces from asylum seekers to meet asylum costs

This reflects the most controversial aspect of the Danish scheme - the Jewellery Law. The toughest Labour MPs thought this was OTT

Thank you for writing this, @timhollo.bsky.social. I've been very critical of COPs for a long time, and you've articulated the fundamental issues with precision.

"A globe of sovereign states is no true globe...a globe of communities acting in concert for the climate can make the COPs obsolete."
All (climate) COPs are bastards.

I've been threatening to write this for years. Here it finally is.

"Just as communities, acting together in concert for common security, can make the cops obsolete, a globe of communities acting in concert for the climate can make the COPs obsolete."
All (climate) COPs Are B*stards
On the need to "Defund the COPs" The ACAB slogan has always jarred with me somewhat. I understand (and respect) it as a systemic critique, intended to reveal that it's impossible for any individual,...

How have Labour watched the Tories spend 2-3 years parroting Farage then lose an election badly and conclude a similar strategy is the best course of action?

We’re approaching the most ridiculous part of the AI bubble, with each day bringing us a new, disgraceful and weird headline. As I reported earlier in the week, OpenAI spent $12.4 billion on inference...

This plays out even in filmmakers/films which are otherwise similar (compare the sprained wrist in Planet Terror with the mutilations in Death Proof). It's why Bresson's Lancelot du Lac is disorienting in its precision orientation. Disorientation as a cue to affect, instead of a cue to disengage.
This is a really remarkable video essay on contemporary film and the theories of Laura Marks. It's making me think about movies in a new way.

It's important to note, as I have multiple times, that it's possible to be Jewish - as I am - and still condemn Israel for genocidal acts. In fact, the history of Judaism makes it clear Jews are obligated to speak out. Never again *means* never again. #zachor
Antisemitism is a lot like Qanon child abuse conspiracies in that there’s this real and bad phenomenon and, parallel to that, what can only be described as a large scale mass psychosis about a mostly fictional version of the same phenomenon

Remember the recent middle-of-the-night apartment building raid where children were dragged outside naked & zip-tied in the street while black & Latino residents were _sorted by race_ and piled into separate vans while their apartments were ransacked & robbed? That raid? So it resulted in 0 arrests.
