I'm sick and feverish, which suggests that I should lay on couch and watch a bad movie.

But it may very well be the last day of bright orange leaves, as winter (50 degree high) starts tomorrow. Which suggests that I should power through it and go on a walk in the woods.

Unironically, this is a sign that China excels at rapid innovation and iterating product lines
For as bad as you think the tech dystopia is here in the US, it seems way worse in China

Let's look at this for the opportunity it is - for everyone to learn the original (and preferred) meaning of the term "emotional labor"
"Store employees are now required to smile if they are within 10 feet of a shopper.

They also must make eye contact with and wave to or greet the customer.

If they’re within four feet, the employee should ask how the customer’s day is going or if they need help."

🙄 Won't stop the boycott, y'all.
Target is now requiring its employees to smile more
As the holiday season fast approaches, Target is urging its employees to add a little more “jolly” to their work routine.

One interesting thing about Woke Bill Kristol is that he hasn't, to my knowledge, gone on an apology tour. People accept him as the ally of the moment he is, because we believe he is sincere in hating these people will every fiber of his being.

China is not a democracy in that sense that it holds elections. It's not even a democracy in the sense that it really holds fake elections.

China's propaganda line is that it's a "democracy" because it's responsive to public opinion or something, but they don't really push it that hard.
I think the difference I see here between these things is that, technically, China and Russia are "democracies" that hold elections and such. But that doesn't mean they're free. That's where we are. Now, can it still be saved? Yeah. I think so. But where we are isn't great.

a perfect example. rod dreher: a person who projects his entirely personal neuroses onto the world, and believes there is a great struggle of heterosexuality against homosexuality that must be waged zealously.

it's good that we make fun of people doing this, actually

Also, you need to demonstrate that no, it was not the US as a whole that intentionally abandoned you, it was an insane, illegitimate executive who also abandoned and betrayed the entire country.

And once we deal with this insane regime, we will come back, free food and pharmaceuticals in hand.
If I was running for Congress, I would promise to appropriate money for USAID, b/c as far as I am concerned it remains an agency as no-one repealed the statute that created it in 1998. It blew my mind at the time that we were like, yep, sure, we will just close an agency without authorization.
The elimination of USAID was an unforgivable moral atrocity that should haunt Trump, Elon Musk and Marco Rubio for the rest of their days and beyond

Trump on SNAP: "Our country has to remain very liquid because problems, catastrophes, wars -- it could be anything. We have to remain liquid. We can't give everything away."

The single biggest question in American law today is:

Are lies a get-out-of-laws-free card? Can the government simply lie to grant itself new powers? And is everyone else under an obligation to act as if obvious lies are true, or at minimum, that they might have merit and deserve respect?

Jury deadlocked: just how offensive IS the smell of onions from an exploded sandwich? One holdout juror insists "very", while another recounts confused folklore of effect of onions on vampires, to mystification of others
logging back on to discover the jury did not return a verdict in the sandwich guy case. what the fuck lol

The youths: excited about election of an earnest, charismatic young politician with fresh ideas.

Me: excited about election of an AG who hates Republicans as much as I do

We are not the same.
Just finished office hours and when I tell you every single student started their meeting by saying how excited they are about Zohran. It’s been a while since I’ve seen them so hopeful. One student said “I needed a win.”

in a welcome surprise, “we fucking hate taxes” apparently carrying the day in the tariffs case and it looks like they’re going down

I’m not used to this much good news in a row I don’t know what to do with my hands
Roberts now going at the solicitor general like a cat with a wounded mouse. Keeps telling him that tariffs are taxes on the American people. "Who pays the tariffs??" Says Trump's argument would neutralize separation of powers between the legislative and executive branches. Incredible stuff.
