The Tories get a lot of shit for section 28 and deservedly so but right now it's probably worth remembering that Labour didn't do anything about it till Blair's second term when it became clear it would be a popular move.
Twenty-two years ago today Section 28 was repealed.

But we're seeing history repeat itself as some in the media and in politics spread bigotry and misinformation about trans people.

sadly the people who engage in this kind of behavior are not very sympathetic to the human impact and just start moaning and groaning the moment you argue that maybe part of transmisogyny is demanding inhumanity from a human.

is a story of maladaptive perfectionism. not that my work is perfect but rather constantly pressuring myself to "get it perfect" and then being rewarded for "getting it perfect" by not being harassed. that behavior is then reinforced b/c if i make a mistake or write something bad i get harassed

i think there is this demand for perfect when you are a transgender woman who is a public figure and esp if you are a journalist, you just have to be perfect. like you cannot get it wrong or make a mistake or mess up. you really are judged so severely and immediately written off. a lot of my career

same dynamics play out over and over again like clockwork. i always feel like everyone has a strong opinion of me, love or hate. and if a piece or two was ill-received there's always a conspiracy, a sinister plot, a sin, a confession of evil, or something to be "fixed" or excised abt me. common

whereas in the years after (and esp when i became more outspoken about sexuality) people tended to have very strong opinions about me, and usually those opinions were impossible to separate from opinions about my gender identity (esp b/c of my work)

10 years of that and i do really see those

one thing i think about a lot is what it was like being a writer before i came out as a trans girl (2012 to 2015) vs afterward

the first three years revealed a lot to me. even when people hated or disliked my work there was a civility limiter. less character assassinations or grifting accusations

I've said it before, but being a trans woman in the public eye seems like being an ant beneath a magnifying glass - waiting for them to find the right angle to burn you to dust.

fuck @peoplemag.bsky.social for deadnaming her and refusing to refer to her with pronouns, fuck cis people for trying to erase us in death! they are extending the violence of her murderer!
Black trans women are paid dust by cis people and trans people. 21 is too young for a trans girl to die. It's not fucking fair. But per the course, Girlalala will be lost in a sea of stories of trans women of color who aren't as loved or as protected as we should be.

May she rest in peace.

Ultimately it’s through public control of the housing stock and government control of a significant portion of supply because afaict rents and prices (in effect a financialised rent to the banking industry) climb to meet what the market will bear and cartelised producers limit supply at that point

The Government’s new housing plan is out. It’s the latest of many. Have you lost count? It’s easy to be cynical about a crisis that has persisted for a decade.

I wrote this in March 24 about Labour's flag-shagging in the lead-up to the election. At the time, people were saying it's absurd for a party to be "ashamed" of the country's flag. With hindsight, can we say that Labour's flag-shagging was a healthy patriotism or did it foreshadow... something else?
You are not the country
Political parties’ dressing up in national colours and symbols may look harmless, but it paves the way to anti-politics and quasi-fascism.

We're an undeniable border violation. We exist and we show that the border between male and female is both permeable and not simply a hierarchy. So we have to be dealt with the way border problems are - extreme violence or a complex series of exceptions.
I think you cannot understand anything until you realise the scale of cis society's obsession with transfeminity and the lengths it goes to not only to quarantine and punish it, but construct social rituals to navigate its presence in everyday cis life.

Any variation in gender/sex is described by these people (Wright, Hilton etc.) are examples of things "going awry", pathological, and it follows from their normative interpretation of biology that homosexuality is something pathological, something "gone awry" in a person's development.

Indeed. It's one step removed from the classic "the parts aren't designed to fit", "biological" normative case against gay people.
Also, these people claim not to be homophobes (even that it is we who are the homophobes), but this argument about what sexual cells and organs are supposed to do could equally be used to right off being gay as a perversion rather than just a fact...
