HR is not a sexy hockey show. It's a show about sexy guys who sometimes play hockey. The sport is never erotic and the locker room is just a room. The porn scenario is abandoned but the romance machinery is rather... hollow? This bothered me. So I wrote 8000 words trying to make sense of it.
Desire and Innocence: Gay Porn Logic, Romance Fantasy, and the Contradiction of Desire in Heated…
Why the “gay hockey show” has become a Rorschach test for what we believe desire really is

When I paid my annual subscription for “Force-feeding the British public Peter Mandelson’s sleaze in ten easy steps,”, I did not expect that the British public would then be force-fed Mandelson’s sleaze. This is an outrage and a tragedy

It does very, very, very much appear that Pippa Crerar has simply copied and pasted a message from Morgan McSweeney.

This sort of feigned shock to the Mandelson shenanigans has been driving me insane so I had to write about democracy being structurally vulnerable to bad faith and that we're being let down by the institutions that should protect that vulnerability.

Can’t wait for someone at work to bring this up, then I’ll have to say “yeah I’ve known about this for at least 6 years”

Then have to explain how Google works and why the press wouldn’t use it

Maybe we should try having an AI prime minister, it will probably not have ulterior motives, conflicts of interest, dodgy pals, etc. the way our rent a gobs do
Talk has turned to who replaces Starmer (again).

Labour MP tonight:

“As far as I'm concerned, Starmer is done. What matters is what's next. If it's Angela, the honeymoon lasts a week. If it's Wes, a month. If it's Al, 6 months. Hard to see how it turns around beyond that.”

"Your representatives are selling you out to spivs over drinks in the strip club" has always been part of my political instincts (also because this has literally happened in Brazil) and 95% of Western politics is this and nothing can improve until we accept it and find a way to stop it.
💥 GOOD.

Because that £240 million contract gifted to Palantir, with no competition…

…after Starmer had an off-the-books meeting with Mandelson and Palantir…

…while Mandelson was officially LOBBYING FOR Palantir and so personally financially benefiting from such links and contracts…

Stinks.

Exactly! The defence is hilarious because it's obvious that Mandelson didn't even lie to him. "The Prince of Darkness always lies" unless he's among his Dark Council
Can't stop laughing at Keir Starmer's defence being "I asked the Prince of Darkness 'are you telling me the truth?' and he said 'yes' and now I have discovered that I was LIED to by the Prince of Darkness! The Prince of Darkness LIED to me!"

Child at the podium: “A woo woo woo.”

Mamdani: That’s how I felt when we came up with this plan. Together, we will expand the idea of what is possible in our city—and what sounds and noises we can make at a press conference.

The Brazilian federal police detained me for an hour as I had once overstayed a visa by accident for two weeks.

After giving me a lecture on immigration policies, they released me.

If I had been a Brazilian in the United States, I'd be in jail.

Brazilian Federal Police Detain Melk, But Release Him After Lecture on Immigration Policies
The Brazilian federal police officer immediately started joking with me, “What do you think, we were gonna throw you in jail? We’re not ICE, we’re Brazilians.”

By returning in Oedipus at Colonus to Oedipus as a blind, "three-footed" old man who opens the play with the word "child" (after Oedipus Rex had started with "children"), Sophocles does not add a new theme to Rex but fully dramatises the neotenic logic already implicit in the Sphinx’s riddle 1/2

Probably my greatest teaching feat was making a senior adult student cry while reading Oedipus at Colonus.

Great pub quiz question: what's the name of Oedipus's real (non-bio) mother?

This is just school stuff. Isn't everyone taught this in school?
Surprisingly good video on the Cold War from David_thegreatest on TikTok.

Covers how the main threats to the US post WW2 were Britain and France's legacy of colonialism and the rise of communism.

Many of todays problems can be explained through this lens.

RPG idea right here.
"By 457, London appears to have become completely abandoned. There is no evidence of anyone living within the walls for the next 200 years. Rather than occupy the overgrown Roman city, Anglo-Saxons at first settled outside the walls, only going inside to scavenge or explore." This sounds creepy!

I get the point but a lot of art theory since the 20th century has critiqued this concept of authorship as control. Dadaism, surrealism etc all tried to de-centre consciousness as the "source" of art.
This is also what New Critics called the intentional fallacy.

ffs stop suggesting we should just bulldoze historical buildings. it should definitely be preserved, but completely vacate it for refurbishment, and then turn it into a museum.
Basically Westminster will have to shut for a century
