So very tired, but I couldn't let 2025 end without taking stock of Microsoft's embarrassing treatment of gaming, Windows, and indeed human beings while it chases the AI money train
Microsoft's year of shame
Can't make a few trillion dollars without ditching game developers, going googoo gaga for AI and supplying tech to the military, I suppose!

And the reason why Birdbrain is so good and why most AI-generated voicework is terrible is THERE IS A HUMAN AT THE WHEEL.

It may be a synth voice but there is someone directing every inch of the sound. Not by prompting, but by painstakingly making sure every note FRACTIONALLY off-key is deliberate.

I mean, one of this year's biggest internet pop hits is sung by a goddamn robot and is STILL a thousand times more charming than any flat, lifeless droning AI-generated delivery.

I get all my news from the guy who gets mad at PC cases and the electronic musician with the eyebrow. Unfortunately, these have become the only reliable sources for investigative journalism.
If you pay attention to any large industry long enough and follow it to its logical conclusion you eventually end up sounding like a communist even if you started off testing CPU case fans. youtu.be/cUrJVdF2me0?...

even among people that aren't aware of the ethical issues surrounding genAI, its pretty quickly become a hallmark of "cheap"

Quantic Foundry does legit trustworthy analysis of gamer behaviour, and these survey results are shockingly negative toward genAI, to the point where I’m more hopeful that data driven mobile and AAA backpedals on their uses.

Very pleased to be able to publish this interview with the legendary composer behind so much of FromSoft's best music (and beyond) in English /and/ Japanese, cos we know there's an audience in both languages for this sort of thing:
We had a chance to interview legendary composer Yuka Kitamura (Elden Ring, Bloodborne, Dark Souls III, & Sekiro) about going freelance, her approach to music composition, wanting to release an original solo album, boss themes, DLC music, coffee, and more: www.rpgsite.net/interview/19...

My controversial opinion is that price gouging should be illegal, even when a computer does it
EXCLUSIVE: We found that Instacart is using AI algorithms to charge customers different prices for the same items.

It's not just online. It's in physical grocery stores too.

Our months-long investigation with @consumerreports.org and @groundwork.bsky.social found it could cost families $1200/year.
