I could hardly miss a Cube event coming to the Twin Cities!
It's no secret we're big Cube fans here at Shoebox. It wouldn't be a proper celebration of all things Cube (and beyond) without some very special guests! 🧊💖
Please welcome Anthony and Andy of Lucky Paper Radio, Usman, Ryan Overturf, and KadeGoforth! #MTGCube

I'm getting ahead of some travel and actually have two new episodes of the podcast recorded! Just finished a shorter one for two weeks for now, in which I mostly talk about how much I love Star Magic. Hopefully y'all have an appetite for some nonsense!

I wouldn't give either of these cards perfect marks, but I love the shape of a two mana creature that "bottles" a card so you can cast it as long as you control the creature. Gwen Stacy is closer to my ideal implementation, but both of these are rad.

I've been digging into some other folks years in review for Magic/Cube- I know that my positions go a bit against the grain, but it's really interesting to see just how much I find myself evaluating this year's releases differently than other folks do.

Why doesn't Magic Arena have a "Fuck you!" emote?

I got into Slay the Spire two years ago and have played several hundred hours on both PC and Switch. The base difficulty offers a ton of fun strategies to explore, and the game has enough going on that the hardest difficulty always leaves room for you to improve.
If anyone wants like... 1000+ hours of entertainment, go buy the Game of All Time for almost nothing.

An easy way to explain this:

Which is easier to do, bake a cake from scratch, or fix a cake that someone baked after they accidentally used salt instead of sugar?
Just a thing about this: a common statement in writing is that you can fix crap, but you can't fix a blank page.

I have heard AI apologists claim that this is why it's fine to generate a first draft.

Now, to be clear, fuck this.

But also: an AI draft is a fucking blank page.
I know I don’t talk about writing much. It is because I am writing so slowly.

But I want you to know that I am taking a part of this story that absolutely sucked and took me months to produce four of the worst chapters I have ever written and in the edit I figured out how to fix it.

I really liked this episode. Avoiding "garbage time" is important to me as a designer. I love cards that dont feel unfair, but also ensure that there is tension in games until they end.

This is the funniest and most embarrassing possible outcome for Bari. People are going to get to see a totally normal news piece that clearly isn't biased against Trump and think, "She was afraid that THIS would upset the administration??"

I had been playing Prowess with a Lesson package on the ladder, and this last week it felt like the format has really adapted to Accumulate Wisdom. After spending most of yesterday getting my ass kicked, I hit Mythic with a more aggressive build today.

The name "Popular Science" doesn't mean we shift our coverage depending on public opinion. It means we cover relevant subjects that are rigorously researched, reliable, and grounded in reality.

And trans lives are grounded in reality.

I'm often asked by prospective Cube designers about how many archetypes should be featured in a Cube, and it's a very common topic of Cube breakdowns, but I personally don't think about that much at all! This piece does a great job of highlighting how archetypes will sort themselves out.

For my 60th article about cube design, I talked about the concept of desire paths and how they manifest in cube design and cube drafting. This article links to a 2015 Third Power cube podcast episode, featuring Marshall Sutcliffe as a guest. 🙂
Paving Desire Paths in Cube Design and Cube Drafting
This article discusses the concept of Desire Paths & how understanding them is useful for Magic: The Gathering's cube format for cube drafting and cube design.
