figure it's time to make a pinned post to warn people.

i post about whatever the hell i want. this is a personal account and i like to talk. sometimes it's politics. sometimes it's horizon (the robot dinosaur franchise). sometimes magic. it is *never* bonus insider content for my day job.

Context: this speech is from SIR THOMAS MORE, a history written, as near as scholars can tell, in the early 1600s by 6 or 7 people including Dekker, Heywood, Chettle, Shakespeare, and Munday.

It was never performed, because Jacobean England was a police state and it was banned by the censor.
Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

gamers are great. i donated some. maybe you can too. every dollar matters.
Incredible. I am going to take a breath and marvel at the fact that Magic: The Gathering players have just raised $75,000 for @translifeline.org in a little over 8 hours.

Come be a part of this. Donate--> give.translifeline.org/tcc

"toddlers don't belong in detention" being a partisan position is the sort of thing that erodes souls on all sides.

and if there is such a thing as a retributive hell, guarantees it for the opposition.
Children at an ICE family detention facility have been denied clean drinking water, medical care, and legal access. Now they may be exposed to measles.

Toddlers don't belong in detention, and Congress must end funding for these sites of abuse.
Measles detected at Dilley immigrant family detention center
The cases come amid renewed nationwide scrutiny of the facility following the transfer there of Liam Conejo Ramos, a 5-year-old Ecuadorian boy who federal agents arrested along with his father in Minneapolis.

i watched my maternal grandfather hobble around for the last two decades and change of his life with a paralyzed leg after a teenage polio infection left it paralyzed.

denying any possible vaccine to children is child abuse, imo. my grandfather deserved to go jogging.

I understand the necessity of parental rights, but when did we decide that anyone under eighteen doesn't get to have rights? When I was seven, I think I had the right not to die of measles. When I was twelve, I think I had the right not to be permanently disabled by polio.
Iowa legislators have just passed a bill out of committee that would end childhood vaccine requirements for school entry.

A state legislator said vaccine exemptions aren’t enough—the whole system must go—because to have to claim a medical or religious exemption is against parental rights.

Counterpoint: they were both angels.

Abolish ICE in its entirety. Never vote for a Republican. Demand the MOST YOU CAN IMAGINE from every politician. We can do better. We must do better.

it's not *not* that though. more just a sign of taste though.

someday the people identifiable in the photos will consider these images badges of honor.

and i hope that day comes soon, if it hasn't already arrived.

if you drive past a cow, you need to acknowledge it somehow. saying "cow" or "moo" is fine. it's cow law.

same with horses. you should at least say "horsey". it's only polite.

this is why i don't support oinking at law enforcement. they haven't earned that respect.

i would watch a movie about someone frozen from 1996 until today.
Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery was released in 1997, about a character frozen in time in 1967. The same movie, released today, would star a character frozen in time in 1996.

i would love it if social media was all this kind of stuff. "huh that's neat" and not a plethora of ragebait.
Here's a cool math fact: If we can go up a set of stairs at one or two steps at a time, the number of different ways we can go up those stairs will always be a Fibonacci number! Here's why:

and better than the first three seasons of discovery or enterprise, too.

both disco and enterprise got much better in their fourth seasons, though.

lukewarm take: for all mankind and the orville are both better star trek shows than picard (any season).

some allison-coded characters.

do i have main character syndrome? a bit. since i was little. maybe more than a bit. but it's come down in recent years. lately i'm much more excited about empowering other people to be awesome. ten years ago, charlie morningstar would be there instead of lin beifong.

it's four episodes so far. and three of them are decent to good.
February 3, 2026 at 11:56 PM
if avery brooks shows up on star trek this week i will absolutely lose my shit.

i strongly suspect this will not happen but i am holding out a little hope. just a little. considering how much they're hyping this as the "what happened to sisko" episode.

like i think you get there plenty with a bottle of (full sugar, not diet) soda, a mentos, and letting the thing explode inside the car making a sticky mess. without smashing the windshield or tossing hydrochloric acid anywhere.
February 3, 2026 at 8:09 PM
i wouldn't recommend that course of action. but i would still understand it.
