Looking for a seasonally-appropriate throwback read? Last year @thebugbeardispatch.bsky.social wrote about the Christian Christmas complex and the holiday blues.
The Most? Wonderful? Time? of the Year
The Christian Christmas industrial complex wants us to buy the illusion of unity while fascism prepares to enter the White House.

I do not think dixiecrat segregationists are the bar we should be aiming to clear in 2025

Also Byrd unreservedly repented from his previous views, Platner has nothing but excuses about how he didn't know it was a nazi tattoo bu if he did it's not a big deal anyway
We cannot survive a world where Susan Collins returns to the Senate. If Platner has a better chance of beating her than his 77 year old opponent, then so be it. The Democrats lived with Senator Robert Byrd for years. Look him up.

If you believe in helping small, marginalized creators who depend on our writing for income get off Substack, I could really use a show of support now.

eat shit, this isn’t “doubling down”, it’s a plain statement of oregon law, bondi’s inability to read is her own problem
In a Tuesday letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, Gov. Tina Kotek defended Oregon’s sanctuary laws and said Bondi’s assertions that the state hampers enforcement of federal immigration laws are unfounded.

Could folks please share this post? The stakes are pretty high for me to get the word out.

Fwiw--and I don't mean to whine, as leaving Substack is necessary and there will never be a "good" time--Ghost's upfront costs are high. For me, about $700 that I put on a credit card
So I ran into some technical issue with the automated migration from Substack to Ghost, and now all I can do is ask those affected--about 200 people--to please subscribe to The Bugbear Dispatch on Ghost once I shut down paid subscriptions on Substack

Last thought for now: we live in a time when people are trying to manufacture consent for abuse of racial minorities, sexual minorities, women, disabled people, and vulnerable people generally, by appealing to multiple imaginary pasts and the assumption that they represent natural norms.

One of the dumbest times I went viral on Twitter was for a thread about this and there were creepy people in my mentions for days. So: fun fact, the average age of a bride on her first marriage in 18th-century England was 26.
Sigh.

Squicky people on the internet are at it again about the alleged old days of teen and tween brides, so this is my cue to bring out the graph showing that the median age for first marriage in the US has never been below 20 for the woman from 1890 to the present.
