i was especially struck by these paragraphs, which rang very true to me. libs who grew up around conservatives aren't embarrassed to be liberals--or confused about what conservatives want. there's a certain kind of elite media man, on the other hand--

I saw an advanced screening of Get Out in Atlanta, absolutely top tier theater experience
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.

If you make a billion dollars — or $500 million or even $100 million dollars — and you keep trying to make more, then there is something seriously wrong with you. It's a mental illness akin to hoarding or drug addiction.

we all got cowed into avoiding "virtue signaling" as if the public affirmation of socially agreed upon ethical principles was somehow cringey instead of a significant part of what a "society" even is. now all there's left is vice signaling, and it's reshaping society.

Just wait until those same mothers of kids who overdosed hear who the president just pardoned....
Batya might be just fine with a dudetrustme basis for a terrorist designation, but Americans with a functioning moral compass actually expect a plausible public rationale for who is to be treated as a terrorist in our name.

If you were a despotic president, what movie would you force Hollywood to make? I want to see Quentin's Star Trek movie or maybe Kill Bill Vol 3.

i'd say it did. the public put a group of thieves, vandals and extremists in office last november and they promptly went about destroying everything that might work to limit their ability to loot, steal and inflicting pain on the people they hate
This whole NYT account about the weaponization of DOJ is beyond disturbing. Kinda feels like the US government fell in January.

A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

I feel like I say this every year but I really need people to hear it. Halloween is the best American holiday. Just kids outside welcomed into their world, marching around together, showing off their costumes to the elderly, parents meeting parents, neighbors catching up with neighbors.

Policymakers are stuck in a 1960s view of economic hardship, where poverty (and program eligibility) comes from lack of employment. We have 70 years of evidence: bad jobs with unpredictable schedules and variable earnings are a larger source of hardship.

The Tyranny of the Low-Quality Job
For decades, a job has been seen as the key to escaping poverty. A major new study turns the question on its head: What if hardship is the result of employment, as opposed to the absence of it?

Tax billionaires into millionaires
Most of them will suffer substantial losses, but unless they are leveraged to the hilt I doubt it impacts much other than their net worth rankings and egos.

Somebody who is worth $10B and loses 90% of it is still beyond fantastically wealthy.

Obviously the best thing is to not get a Nazi tattoo and the second best is to have removed it long ago. But why isn't he now filming a video going to a tattoo artist in Maine and getting it covered up and talking about how people can learn and grow? Instead he's doubling down?!
I don't like the 79-year-old filibuster-lover either, but Jon and his pod bros are pushing a guy who carries the insignia of the Schutzstaffel on his chest and says that's not a big deal. He's either a Nazi or an idiot who is too proud to admit an enormous mistake. Give me a break about "perfect."
