Piggybacking: let the characters have their secrets too. Sometimes they don’t want to tell you thinks. Sometimes they’re going to shout at you, make you do what they want instead of what you want. Just go with it. If you want realistic characters, you’re merely their muse.

Treat the process of creating a character like that of getting to know a friend. Let them talk. See what you find out. Don't expect to know them fully the first time you meet them on the page. Tease out their past, their secrets. Allow them to surprise you.
