"We don't want to be Luddites --" brother, Luddites were opposed to bosses concentrating wealth by using technology to make inferior product with warehouses fulls of starving exploited child labor. You don't have to wear the team jersey but respect the game.

i hate that AI is such a buzzword these days because it's all linear algebra soup and sometimes the soup is actually extremely good. GFS's reduced accuracy in previous events (hurricane sandy, notably) from computational limitations has cost lives. 99.7% reduction with comparable accuracy is insane.

The job market is vanishingly small, and programs keep cranking out PhDs to apply to jobs that they simply cannot get- and they often spend years warning them that the jobs will not exist! And then the jobless blame race and gender, when the issue is really that they imagined they’d be an exception!

Here are the 28 Dem Senators who voted to advance the first federal ban on trans athletes & a federal definition of sex that would make trans & intersex people non-existent: Angela Alsobrooks (MD), Tammy Baldwin (WI), Richard Blumenthal (CT), Lisa Blunt Rochester (DE), Chris Coons (DE), ->
By a vote of 76-23, S 1071 passes the motion to proceed to the motion to concur. Won't know who voted for this until the roll call is uploaded, but safe to say it passed with the support of at least 24 members of the Democratic caucus. (Rand Paul probably voted nay and Steve Daines has been absent).

Sometimes you write an artifact description and it feels so dirty. Describing a urinometer float and had to put "with a dark bulbous head" BECAUSE IT HAS ONE, DAMMIT!

One of my all-time favorite clips of Rob Reiner, from his Friars Club Roast in 2000, as he reads aloud Roger Ebert's infamous scathing review of his movie North. The man had an amazing sense of humor about himself. RIP.

Also, after the Port Arthur massacre (35 dead, 24 wounded) the Australian government tightened gun laws and did a massive gun buyback program. And this was basically the second shooting where the dead was in double digits (according to wikipedia there was one other in the 70s that killed 10).
Just want to share with my American friends how the Australians respond to a shooting tragedy. Action, rather than thoughts and prayers.

You guys really need to develop the capacity of simultaneously holding the truth that the colonialist occupation and genocide of Palestine is unacceptable AND violent antisemitism is real

Both are true

"pent up demand for rail options" also explains much of the success of Heated Rivalry
seriously though, there is very clearly pent up demand for rail options and every reason to build out as much new rail as possible.

How much money is spent (read: wasted) on curriculum "products" that change constantly and don't work, instead of relying on the training, knowledge and professionalism of great teachers?

How much do we waste on standardized tests that teach nothing, do nothing, reveal nothing?
"Some [teachers] complained about the effect of technology on students’ stamina for reading and interest in books. But more pointed toward the curriculum products their schools had purchased from major publishers."

That about sums it up. "Curriculum products" are killing education.

Folks might not know a lot of people are getting *very* upset that the materials they request are not available in the libraries/archives they're requesting from.

We're getting lots here at the Library of Virginia: requests of documents likely surfaced by large language models that *do not exist*.

Awww my husband is not a Les Mis fan. He’d never seen a staged production and he was like “the singers were excellent, it gave off lots of feels, the production was cool. I hated it. Bad history, maudlin melodrama, what is it really *about*, it’s not even deep!”
