Hello! I'm Jonathan.

I've been working on the internet for 15+ years now.

I built my first website, one weekend, sick, with a tax refund check, CSS for Dummies, and a text editor. Signed my first client a few months later—National Geographic photographer.

Been working on internet things since.

As someone who works on the interaction layer of software: it's this.

Stupid trends in hardware self correct after a generation or two, but *software* ratchets in the direction of unusable because designers are occupied with interaction patterns and not whether the fucking thing works properly.
i think it's useful to look at areas where the *tech* has gotten much better while tech *interactions* have gotten way worse. streaming has gotten worse, google search has gotten worse, digital cameras are leaps better. apple's silicone is so good it's threatening their user upgrade cycle
it’s so weird to look around and realize like, tech and media are materially worse than a decade ago

Absolutely this.

Having a disability does not excuse fascism or bigotry. You’re still responsible for your shit.

Not sure how this is a hard concept.
I never thought I would read a bunch of posts from ONE account that just boils down to "some people who have mental disabilities can't help but be fascist", and I am just like, what the fuck?! You do NOT, under ANY circumstances, have to defend fascists, even the ND ones.

Today I was told it’s a luxury that I can stay in bed posting on social media … and that men are the ones giving me that luxury

Being bedbound is not a luxury

Social media is a connection to the world for many of us

Disability is not a vacation & men aren’t providing for the vast majority of us

Our indy web agencies are struggling. I know first hand the incredible quality of Set Studio’s work and I’d urge anyone who needs a bit of website love (or indeed a new one) to hit them up.

Likewise, if you’ve got a bit of learning budget kicking about, get yourself a piccalilli course.
A bit of a vulnerable post by me but we need your help to get us through what has been a more difficult period than 2020.

It would be really appreciated if you could read and share in your networks too 💛

What do these corporations have in common?

Netflix
Ford
Tesla
T-Mobile
Duke Energy
DISH Network
Metlife
Dominion Energy
United States Steel

In recent years, they all paid their execs more than they paid in taxes.

This is what a corporate-rigged system looks like.

If you’re looking for a studio/agency to get your project going, I couldn’t recommend Set.Studio enough:

It's sociotechnical systems all the way down!
I suspect that we really do need to emphasize a much more social learning/collaborative knowledge approach to this versus individual understanding, that's the piece that software culture doesn't like to admit though!

The convo about money and what someone's situation looks like from the outside is so important. As a single, full-time freelancer, my financial situation in a cost of living crisis is not great. I am honest about that; the constant grind is taxing and people should know what they might be facing.
If you have ever thought that my journalism or my first book were net positives for the world, understand that they probably would not exist if I did not have a spouse who paid the mortgage. If I'd been a solo earner/parent, I likely would have left criticism, journalism or book writing long ago.
And the folks who are actually writing full-time generally only got there after years of day jobs, family support, or both.

The point of sharing this is not to demoralize anyone, but to let emerging writers know they're not failing if they can't make a living off writing alone. Almost no one can.
