Bari Weiss just sent this Christmas Eve email to the CBS News staff about "building trust," which includes her tripling down on spiking the CECOT piece "to make sure it's comprehensive and fair."

One CBS staffer tells me: "She really has no idea how insulting she comes across."

The two most common predictors in the modern era of the success of a modern welfare state are the level of homogenity of the population and the size of the country.

Europe is a constant demonstration that you change no. 1 and the entire socialist paradise you've built goes entirely insane.
Also, European voters keep coming very close to electing “kill all the $slurs race war now” parties and so Americans pretending that that’s normal or that they are somehow Wise and not at all TurboReactionary is insane. The AFD is the 2nd largest party in the Bundestag!
as far as I can tell, the only piece of evidence that "Democrats would be center-right in Europe" is that Democrats mostly don't want to nationalize big chunks of the economy and there are some countries in Europe where major parties on the left still at least pretend to want it

There’s a good chance Bari Weiss running CBS News will create a new, more confusing version of FOX that further erodes the news landscape but it’s also just as likely that she pockets the cash and dive bombs it into the ground like an Osprey.

It’s fascinating.

The notion that your economic challenges are real, and should be addressed, but are not greater than economic challenges of various times in the past really bothers some people.

This has to be the worst economy ever. As if 20th century ads and sitcoms were the common experience.

not that the present economic picture is rosy, but i do think that popular culture — and specifically nostalgia bait television — is a big part of the reason that our public memory of the 1970s, 1980s and even 1990s seems to miss the real economic pain that marked each of those decades.

“Politicians should do what wins elections” is asinine for moral reasons but also, no one knows what will win an election! Yglesias et al keep acting like there’s some obvious set of policies or words that will guarantee victory but Harris basically did what they wanted and she lost.
4. Yglesias instead seems to implicitly argue that politicians should only do what wins elections, virtue be damned. One wonders what he thinks of those foolish 1850s abolitionists. As Condleeza Rice once said, politics is the art of making the impossible inevitable. That ain't this.

data is important, measurement of public opinion is important, but politics also isn't a machine. there are a vast number of qualitative factors at work. and people themselves are unpredictable.

Because I do a lot of takedowns of DW Griffith, I think people assume that I demand moral perfection from old movies and movie people. I don’t. What I am after is intellectual honesty from modern viewers.

Griffith is often painted as a naive sweetie who accidentally made a KKK recruitment film.

one thing that is important to know is that BIRTH OF A NATION is so racist that people at the *time*, in 1915, were like, “holy shit this is racist”
When the slightest bit of research shows he was consistently racist and a daddy issues Confederate fanboy.

People try to paint BIRTH OF A NATION as a masterpiece with some unfortunate racism. The whole movie is racist, the “masterpiece “ thing was backfilled to excuse it.

There has been one (1) period of sustained deflation (eg prices down for multiple years in a row) since the 1910s. That was the Great Depression. I understand why people (not Chris, he gets it) naively think prices should fall but I cannot emphasize enough how Bad that would be.

A story I found about Haiti:

In 1999, a group of Haitians were tired of political disorder and dreamed of a better life in the United States. So they built a small, 23-foot boat by hand using pine trees, scrap wood, and used nails. They called the boat "Believe in God."
